PBA Referees Edward Aquino, Gruta banned for the rest of the conference for Pringle non-call

Stanley Pringle shoots over Japeth Aguilar (Photo grabbed from Inquirer.net)

The PBA has banned referees Edward Aquino and Rommel Gruta for officiating for the rest of the PBA Philippine Cup admitting that the officials missed the five-second and stepping call of GlobalPort Batang Pier Guard Stanley Pringle in the dying seconds of the quarterfinal knock-out game versus Barangay Ginebra last Sunday.

The suspension will lead to both Aquino and Gruta not officiating for a minimum of 15 games and a maximum of 21 games.

Barangay Ginebra didn't file a protest of the game which was allowed until 12nn, Monday.

Here's the statement of the PBA Office of the Commissioner in full:
All the referees were present in the meeting with the Commissioner. In their opening statement, the referees accepted that they missed the call, they were apologetic and were ready to face the sanctions that would be imposed on them.

In the deliberation with the technical committee, it was determined that two (2) violations were not called. One was the 5-second ball hogging violation which was the responsibility of referee Rommel Gruta.

The second infraction was the backing violation of GlobalPort’s Stanley Pringle, whose responsibility was that of referee Edward Aquino’s.

The technical committee also determined that only referees Aquino and Gruta were liable for these missed calls.

As a result of these two non-calls, Barangay Ginebra was denied final ball possession.

The technical committee decided that both referees shall be suspended for the rest of the ongoing Philippine Cup effective immediately.

Perez Hilton talks on why Pia Wurtzbach won Miss Universe 2015

Celebrity blogger and one of the four Miss Universe judges Perez Hilton talked last December 21 (Monday US time) on why Pia Wurtzbach won Miss Universe 2015.

Perez reveals what really happened on that pageant night when Steve Harvey announced initially that Colombia's Ariadna Gutierrez won before correcting his announcement to Philippines' Pia Wurtzbach.

"We knew who the chosen 15 was before we started voting...you have instantly your favorites in mind for a variety of reasons and they explain to you that it is a beauty pageant and you really are looking for a beautiful girl. But, it’s not just beauty and I think that’s really important to clarify because a lot of people, especially judging from the comments on my social media from Colombians, they're really upset Miss Colombia did not win.

I'll go on record and state: Miss Colombia was the most beautiful contestant, but I don't think she deserved to win the title.

She didn't win the title for a variety of reasons and I'll get to them all...

Going into the swimsuit portion...I hope I don't get into trouble for this...for me I really took everything into consideration, not just how they look in a bikini, for me, at that point already, I was thinking about them as a person and not as an object because you got to hear them speak. Having said that, Miss Philippines...

Here's the difference between Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia: Miss Philippines came to win, Miss Colombia came to lose.

Colombia came as if she had already won, and that's sexy also, to have that confidence but I think she truly believed that she was going to win. Whereas Miss Philippines came with something to prove, so before they switched in their swimsuits, I saw them all and I didn't think Philippines would rock the swimsuit competition, you literally had 20 seconds to vote in the swimsuit pageant. For me, I would pre-judge the girls so to me, I would give them a 9 if I wanted them to go through, and then an 8 for a maybe or yes, and a 7 if I didn't want them to go through and then I would fine-tune it.

For me, Colombia was always a frontrunner. I gave her a 9. A girl can sometimes perform and surprise. I wasn't expecting much of Philippines from her swimsuit portion, so I already thought she was not going to be that good, and then she came out, and 'Boom!' she gave me fierceness, then I saw her big ol' probably fake t***ies jigglin'. She owned it and I was like 'Wow, she is rocking this!' I was originally gonna score her way lower, ended up scoring her way higher.

I'm looking for someone that would surprise me, for that sparkle, for that 'It' factor, she really surprised me, I wasn’t expecting her to be so fierce and fabulous in that swimsuit pageant. By then my favorites were Colombia, Philippines, France, USA, Japan, Venezuela, and Dominican Republic.

When the evening gown competition happened, I thought that for sure Miss Colombia was going to win. In my mind Colombia won the evening gown portion.

What also made this pageant different was they introduced a second question, it was really a second opportunity for the contestants to be seen, not just visually, it's really who's deserving of being Miss Universe.

During the interview portion, I thought that Colombia gave a great answer and the Philippines gave a great answer, and then I became a little uncertain, but I was still favoring Colombia at that point, and then, when it was time for advocating, 'Why I should be Miss Universe,' that's when it became certain for me because at that point, I don't know if the people at home could see this, Miss Colombia was being straight-up diva bitch rude to her translator. Did you see this? She was giving the most awful side-eye, throwing major shade because Colombia was not happy with the pace or the way that the translator was translating. It was a major turn-off.

Miss Philippines gave a better answer. It was the second time she gave a great answer and actually a better answer and by that point, I thought, 'Wow, she really brought her A game' and was super competitive but also deserved it. She deserves it. There was a real beauty, grace, and elegance and she is Miss Universe.

She really earned it and won fair and square.

I voted for Miss Philippines and I found out afterwards that it was unanimous. Every single judge in that panel, all four of us, voted for Miss Philippines to be number one!

So then, when Steve Harvey announced that Miss Colombia had won, I was in shock. I couldn't even speak. We didn't look at each other because we were all in shock, we knew something was off. When Steve Harvey announced Miss Colombia had won, I thought 'This is rigged.' But then it became clear then Steve comes out and announces that a mistake was made."

Full Text: Pope Francis' speech in Malacanang Palace

Below is the full text of Pope Francis' speech at Malacañang after his courtesy call on President Aquino on Friday, Jan. 16.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I thank you, Mr President, for your kind welcome and for your words of greeting in the name of  the authorities and people of the Philippines, and the distinguished members of the Diplomatic Corps. I am most grateful for your invitation to visit the Philippines.

My visit is above all pastoral.

It comes as the Church in this country is preparing to celebrate the fifth centenary of the first proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on these shores. The Christian message has had an immense influence on Filipino culture.

It is my hope that this important anniversary will point to its continuing fruitfulness and its  potential to inspire a society worthy of the goodness, dignity and aspirations of the Filipino people.

In a particular way, this visit is meant to express my closeness to our brothers and sisters who endured the suffering, loss and devastation caused by Typhoon Yolanda.

Together with many people throughout the world, I have admired the heroic strength, faith and resilience demonstrated by so many Filipinos in the face of this natural disaster, and so many others.

Those virtues, rooted not least in the hope and solidarity instilled by Christian faith, gave rise to an outpouring of goodness and generosity, especially on the part of so many of the young. In that moment of national crisis, countless people came to the aid of their neighbors in need.

At great sacrifice, they gave of their time and resources, creating networks of mutual help and working for the common good.

This example of solidarity in the work of rebuilding teaches us an important lesson. Like a family, every society draws on its deepest resources in order to face new challenges.

Today the Philippines, together with many other countries in Asia, faces the challenge of building on solid foundations a modern society – a society respectful of authentic human values, protective of our God-given human dignity and rights, and ready to confront new and complex political and ethical questions.

As many voices in your nation have pointed out, it is now, more than ever, necessary that political leaders be outstanding for honesty, integrity and commitment to the common good. In this way they will help preserve the rich human and natural resources with which God has blessed this country.

Thus will they be able to marshall the moral resources needed to face the demands of the present, and to pass on to coming generations a society of authentic justice, solidarity and peace.

Essential to the attainment of these national goals is the moral imperative of ensuring social justice and respect for human dignity. The great biblical tradition enjoins on all peoples the duty to hear the voice of the poor.

It bids us break the bonds of injustice and oppression which give rise to glaring, and indeed scandalous, social inequalities. Reforming the social structures which perpetuate poverty and the exclusion of the poor first requires a conversion of mind and heart.

The Bishops of the Philippines have asked that this year be set aside as the “Year of the Poor.”

I hope that this prophetic summons will challenge everyone, at all levels of society, to reject every form of corruption which diverts resources from the poor, and to make concerted efforts to ensure the inclusion of every man and woman and child in the life of the community.

A fundamental role in the renewal of society is played, of course, by the family and especially by young people.

A highlight of my visit will be my meetings with families and with young people here in Manila.

Families have an indispensable mission in society. It is in the family that children are trained in sound values, high ideals and genuine concern for others.

But like all God’s gifts, the family can also be disfigured and destroyed. It needs our support. We know how difficult it is for our democracies today to preserve and defend such basic human values as respect for the inviolable dignity of each human person, respect for the rights of conscience and religious freedom, and respect for the inalienable right to life, beginning with that of the unborn and extending to that of the elderly and infirm.

For this reason, families and local communities must be encouraged and assisted in their efforts to transmit to our young the values and the vision which can help bring about a culture of integrity – one which honors goodness, truthfulness, fidelity and solidarity as the firm foundation and the moral glue which holds society together.

Mr President, distinguished authorities, dear friends:

As I begin my visit to this country, I cannot fail to mention the Philippines’ important role in fostering understanding and cooperation among the countries of Asia.

I would also mention the oft-neglected yet real contribution of Filipinos of the diaspora to the life and welfare of the societies in which they live.

It is precisely in the light of the rich cultural and religious heritage of which your country is proud that I leave you with a challenge and a word of prayerful encouragement.

May the deepest spiritual values of the Filipino people continue to find expression in your efforts to provide your fellow citizens with an integral human development.

In this way, each person will be able to fulfill his or her potential, and thus contribute wisely and well to the future of this country.

I am confident that the praiseworthy efforts to promote dialogue and cooperation between the followers of the different religions will prove fruitful in the pursuit of this noble goal.

In a particular way, I express my trust that the progress made in bringing peace to the south of the country will result in just solutions in accord with the nation’s founding principles and respectful of the inalienable rights of all, including the indigenous peoples and religious minorities.

Upon all of you, and upon all the men, women and children of this beloved nation, I cordially  invoke God’s abundant blessings.
