Comelec bans replacement of party-list nominees

MANILA, Philippines - Giving a seat to another in the party-list is no longer acceptable as far as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is concerned.

To prevent unqualified candidates from taking over a congressional post, the Comelec has barred party-list (PL) representatives from resigning to allow another nominee to fill the vacant seat.
In a resolution, the Comelec has effectively disallowed term-sharing among party-list members in the middle of the three-year term.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said under the new rules, only untimely death or disqualification of the sitting nominees shall be considered as reasonable grounds to replace the representatives.
“We are now outlawing nominee replacements without valid reason,” Jimenez disclosed.

The Comelec requires party-list groups to submit a maximum of five names as their nominees who are listed from the first to fifth nominees prior to the elections.

The party-list group that garnered at least two percent of the total votes during the polls is entitled to at least one congressional seat or up to a maximum of three seats based on their rankings.

The Comelec, however, observed that some party-list representatives after assuming post would eventually resign in favor of another nominee.

“The term-sharing policy is usually used internally within the (PL) organization. However there would be instances that a representative would resign to accommodate a nominee, which in effect will result to term- sharing. We are now making it explicit that those kinds of arrangements would not be allowed,” Jimenez explained in a mix of Filipino and English.

Jimenez said the poll body adopted the new rule to prevent possible infiltration of “unqualified” nominees through term-sharing.

In past elections, some party-list candidates were accused that they do not truly represent the marginalized group.

Requirements for eligibility include documentary evidences to prove track record of participating in party-list activities; proofs adhering to the group’s advocacies; and certification of being a bona-fide member at least 90 days prior to elections.

No Resignation Whatsoever?

Amidst the controversies strucked upon by Pagcor Chairman Naguiat, Malacanang would not push through him to resign or to go on leave while under investigation.

In an interview with radio dzRB, deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said any calls for a leave of absence, or even resignation, will be up to the discretion of Naguiat.

“Any call for resignation [or leave] for any office, we leave it to the discretion of the official [concerned]. Bahala na sya diyan,” she said.

Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz called for Naguiat’s resignation amid the bribery scandal that arose last week.

The issue stemmed from the lawsuit filed by the United States-based Wynn Resorts against one of its estranged business partners, Kazuo Okada.

Okada allegedly violated the US’ Foreign Corrupt Practices Act when he spent $110,000 on Naguiat and other officials to ensure that plans for a casino here will push through.

Okada allegedly billeted Naguiat and his family in Wynn Macau’s most expensive suite for five days in 2010. The suite is supposedly priced at $6,000 a night.

Naguiat already denied the bribery charges.

Aleli Arroyo out of Iggy's will

Grace Ibuna, the live-in partner of Ignacio "Iggy" Arroyo, and not his estranged second wife Aleli Arroyo will benefit from the late congressman's trust estate, according to his last will and testament.

Iggy named Bernardina Arroyo Tantoco, his daughter with his first wife Marilyn Jacinto, as the executor of the will that was made in Glendale, California in 2009.

He also named Tantoco as the trustee in the "living trust" that he made before he died.
Upon his death, the trust will issue payments only to Ibuna until her death, according to the will.
Upon Ibuna's death, the remaining balance of the trust estate will go to Iggy's 3 children Tantoco, Bianca Marie Arroyo, and Alicia Lourdes Arroyo.

Commissioner quashes Lassiter to Petron deal

You would not see Marcio wearing another uniform... at least for now.

PBA Commissioner Chito Salud on Monday vetoed a proposed trade that would have sent Powerade Tiger Marcio Lassiter to the Petron Blaze Boosters in exchange for Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra.

Trade goes back to the respective teams for revisions, as it is confirmed that Powerade didn't have a change of ownership yet.

With Petron down 0-2... what to do next?

Petron Blaze Boosters Import: Nick Fazekas, one-faceted only?

After losing their first two games in a very short Commissioner's Cup Eliminations, Petron Blaze Boosters are in a 0-2 hole to deal with as every game becomes a must-win for them to avoid elimination. Fans look at the team's import: Nick Fazekas who provides close to 30+ points a game, both in a losing effort that drowned emotions of the Petron fans. Nick also changed the game of the locals, making it his show...

SO FOR PETRON... What should they do next?

ELAINE KAY MOLL from Miss World Philippines to Bb. Pilipinas

It was acknowledged before that products of BBP were the one who made waves in the inaugural edition of Miss World Philippines 2011 (Ruais, the eventual winner was BBP 2010 semifinalist, Henson was BBP 2010 2nd Runner Up, McCulley was at BBP 2011, Paz and Arrozal during the BBP 2009) but let's have it the other way around now, MWP alumni, Elaine Kay Moll made the official list of candidates for Binibining Pilipinas 2012. Will the training she received from the CQGQ camp and Madam Cory Quirino be enough to pave her way to the three BBP crowns at stake come April 15? I'm an interested spectator...

VP Binay: Target of Corona trial

I just saw this post in INQUIRER and this was written by Rigoberto Tiglao... I highly agree with him though I take no side in the impeachment trial as I write my blog: Mich of News Bits Online

Jejomar Binay Jr. is the political target of President Aquino and the Liberal Party’s imperious blitzkrieg to remove Chief Justice Renato Corona from the Supreme Court, sources close to the Vice President claimed.
“Everyone knows that the trial is a power game that has nothing to do with an anti-corruption crusade,” one source said. “If Corona is taken out and (senior Associate Justice Antonio) Carpio becomes chief justice, and with the rest of the justices terrorized, may laban si Mar maging vice president soon,” he said.
Startling as the claim may seem, the facts supporting it are unassailable.
Alleging massive cheating by Binay, vice presidential candidate Mar Roxas filed an electoral protest in July 2010 with the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET). Roxas alleges that Binay’s lead over him of 730,000 votes would have been wiped out and he would have won by a landslide if the optical-scan counting machines had not voided 3 million of his votes. The PET has already secured the ballots in the areas where Roxas claims he was cheated, and its pre-hearing investigations are underway.
The PET – many have forgotten – is the Supreme Court chaired by Chief Justice Corona.
If Aquino gets to control the high court, which he will if Corona is taken out, and with the rest of the justices frightened either by the prospect of their own impeachment or media demonization, he controls the PET, which would fast-track Roxas’ protest, declare him the winner, and proclaim him the Republic’s vice president.
To prepare public opinion for this, the Ombudsman, assisted by a new member of the Commission on Audit, would hurl a flurry of graft cases against Binay to demonize him. This is the real reason, they said, why Aquino’s forces removed Ombudsman Mereditas Gutierrez and replaced her with his favorite justice, Conchita Carpio-Morales. Morales is a cousin of Justice Carpio, and the law firm he founded, now the Villaraza Cruz Marcelo & Angangco, is Roxas’ counsel for his electoral protest.
Told that no presidential or vice presidential protest has ever been won, my source replied: “But never has an administration dared to take out a Chief Justice, and even more justices if they don’t toe its line.”
The very recent case of Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo bolsters fears that the regime can browbeat justices to submission. Despite Corona’s ongoing trial, the House of Representatives’ justice committee still rushed Del Castillo’s impeachment February 7. Two days later, the embattled Del Castillo voted with Carpio and with Aquino’s three appointees – Ma. Lourdes Sereno, Bienvenido Reyes and Estela Perlas-Bernabe – for the Senate to scrutinize Corona’s dollar accounts.
Watch the impeachment trial and it is the four Liberal Party senators who unabashedly want to prove Corona guilty, even assisting bungling prosecutors.
Check out the people in the campaign to take out Corona, and it is a Liberal Party production: from party chairman Aquino to vice chairman Franklin Drilon who has been accused of practically being a prosecutor in the trial, to executive vice president Feliciano Belmonte, speaker of the House of Representatives that filed the complaint, to Niel Tupas Jr. head of the prosecution panel, down to the prosecutors’ belligerent spokespersons.
This is not because of the party’s servility to Aquino, but because its future depends entirely on party president Roxas becoming vice president soon, which will be his jumping board for the 2016 presidency. But already, Roxas has been marginalized, with Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa and his gang having blocked his bid to be a high-profile presidential chief of staff, and maneuvering him instead into the labyrinthine and corruption-ridden Department of Transportation and Communications. When transport prices soar, and they will, Roxas will be the most unpopular Cabinet member.
The Liberal Party’s golden age was, ironically, when Diosdado Macapagal, the father of Gloria Arroyo whom it has been crucifying, won the presidency in 1961. After Macapagal, it has been downhill for five decades to near-extinction, losing consistently in presidential and vice presidential elections, and winning very few seats in Congress.
It has not been able to produce political leaders with gravitas who could be presidential timber. Even the new generation of Liberals are hardly poster boys for a holier-than-thou party: P50-million-mansion-owner Tupas Jr., the obnoxious prosecution spokesman Miro Quimbo, tainted by the alleged Globe Asiatique property scam; former deputy customs chief Reynaldo Umali, caught lying with his fictitious “small-lady-informant” yarn.
Aquino is the first Liberal to win the presidency since Macapagal, but this was due neither to his personality nor to the Liberal’s political prowess, but because of mass hysteria that Cory Aquino’s spirit lives in his son’s body. A Roxas win would have ensured a new, post-Aquino golden age for the Liberal Party. But he lost, and the Liberals are now trying to move mountains to reverse his defeat, with Corona’s impeachment as the most crucial phase of that campaign.
As in all major historical events, Corona’s trial has its economic element (to get P10 billion for Hacienda Luisita) and its political dimension (to get Roxas to be vice president). There is also a personal facet to it.
Corona’s term – if he is not taken out – ends October 2018. For senior Associate Justice Carpio, who was appointed by Arroyo five months before Corona, the scenario is sheer psychological torture. He will spend seven maddening years seeing his rival preside over the Court, and when he becomes chief justice, it will be for only one year, as he retires October 2019.

On Breaking Up and Moving On

Breaking up is never fun. The end of a relationship means the beginning of a period of mourning and healing for both people. If the break up was mutual both people will experience a period of adjustment where they are getting used to no longer being together. If the break up was not mutual the person who ended things may be dealing with guilt and feelings that they may have made a mistake. The person being broken up with will definitely have to adjust, first to being rejected and second to life without somebody they still care for. How do you get through those first few weeks? Here we list eight essential things everybody must do in the early days of a break up to let the healing begin.
  1. Avoid the former love. Yes, avoid. No, this isn’t being immature. Seeing your former flame can bring out emotions and may cause you do to or say something you will regret. In the first few weeks the best thing you can do for yourself is not be where you know they will be.
  2. Talk out your feelings with close friends. Get everything out so that you won’t hold it inside. Your friends may get sick of hearing you talk about the situation but you need to let out all your feelings and thoughts or they may come back to bite you later.
  3. Cry if you want to. It’s OK to cry over a loss. Don’t hold back, let the tears roll just do it in a safe and private place where it is unlikely to get back to your ex. You don’t want your tears to be used as a guilt trip. Their purpose is to cleanse you of any pain not make your lover come back.
  4. Let go of mementos. Put away or give away anything and everything that reminds you of the relationship. Hide them out of sight so they will be out of mind until you are able to remember the relationship without longing for it to still be going strong.
  5. Don’t slip up and get together with your ex. When you are feeling sad or missing a relationship it can be very easy to fall back in to the arms of your ex but DO NOT DO THIS. This will only set you back and let’s face it, if things ended the relationship wasn’t perfect to begin with so why would you want to rekindle things?
  6. Focus on all the things about your ex that drove you crazy, turned you off, or that you just plain found annoying. Think about these things often and replay them in your mind over and over. Dwell on them. It will make you feel better to remember that your former flame was not perfect and that there are things you won’t really miss.
  7. Think about the mean, cruel or rude things your ex may have done in your relationship. Really give these things play in your memory. Remind yourself that somebody who truly cared for you would not have done such thoughtless things and tell yourself (over and over) that you are better off without that kind of ego crushing behavior in your life.
  8. Maintain a strict no contact policy and stick with it. Don’t pass notes through friends. Don’t make any calls. Stay away from instant messaging or texting on your cell. Just don’t contact your ex until you are totally and completely sure you no longer want to be with him or her. It is the only way.
Mending a broken heart is not easy but it can be done. Just stick to the game plan outlined above and before you know it you’ll be just fine. Good luck!

This was an old speech I used for my Speech class in college, I wanted to share it with you.

Trade Proposal: Powerade's Super Rookie Lassiter to Petron for Baclao & Guevarra

After the successful defense of the Talk and Text Tropang Texters of their Philippine Cup championship, rumor has it that Powerade's franchise would be back to the SMC fold as its 4th team in the league (they once had Coca Cola before), but even if there is no clarification as of yet whether Powerade would be under the SMC umbrella, the opposing teams made waves as there would be a trade between Super Rookie Marcio Lassiter of Powerade Tigers to Petron's 2010 1st and 3rd Draft Picks, Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra.

(I think this picture started it all.. hahaha, what's wrong with a Tiger drinking beer.. San Miguel is one hell of a great-tasting beer... Come on? - Photo grabbed from @LadyLassiter13 by @snowbadua)

(The blog owner with Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra during one of PBB's games last December, Will this be the last time I would see them in PBB uniforms?)

This is still a trade proposal as it is subject for the approval of the Commissioner's Office, however, a lot have continuously reacted, in both positive and negative ways regarding this trade. Here are some reactions that I've read in fanpages, Twitter and Facebook. They actually contributed to the load that Twitter has.
First reaction: for Petron's Noy and Rey, even though they belonged to the 2010 top picks, they do not deserve to be traded for a guy who had superb showing like Marcio.
Yes, they might not score in bunches but please do not forget what Rey and Noy can do. If you would look at the background of Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra, particularly during their college years, they are potent players and great defenders. Noy once lead the Blue Eagles in rebounds and defense purposes. Rey can shoot from the perimeter and was a slam-dunking champion during his heydays in Letran, However upon their arrival to Petron, they were outshadowed by the likes of Arwind Santos, Chris Lutz, Rob Reyes and playing time was actually limited.

Second reaction: SMC = GREED
If this trade consummated, in the eyes of many, SMC = GREED, they are greedy of getting good players to add to their titles and what a way to do it but for Petron, the San Miguel franchise who has 19 conference titles. Do you think this as of GREED? Come on PBA fans... speak...
Third reaction: Stupid Powerade Management
<I beg to erase this comment, it's up to you to decide, but then, for me, they are not stupid.>

and many more.... Actually if I list them all, this blog post would be a novel.

Powerade players have also reacted heavily in Twitter. I don't blame them, Marcio is Marcio. The 5th Best Player for the All Filipino Cup.

No Final Word yet regarding this trade, but if it pursues, I think somebody would be added on the trading picture (if Commissioner Salud does not see it balance). For now, I would like to say that I want to see Noy and Rey in a Boosters uniform nonetheless. The team still waits for the comeback of Jay Washington my goodness.

Powerade, my hats off for a wonderful Philippine Cup showing. I know you are very much a contender.

I'm a fan of  both teams... I would like to see "FAIRNESS", but I'm sure it could not make everybody happy.

Ako Legal Wife Seemed To Be More Than Movies

I first thought that "Ako Legal Wife" would just be in the movies, but it taken effect even after the demise of Rep. Iggy Arroyo as his erstwhile legal wife, Alicia Morales Arroyo would fight tooth and nail to bring his remains back to the Philippines.
Rep. Iggy and Alicia had been separated and the Congressman has a new girlfriend - Grace Ibuna (formerly in a relationship with Gabby Concepcion). Grace Ibuna insisting that she's legal kin to Arroyo as its marriage with Alicia Arroyo was already annulled.

Indeed, pageant netizens are at it after learning that the 2011 Bb. Pilipinas Runners-up, Janine Tugonon and MJ Lastimosa both submitted their applications for Bb. Pilipinas 2012. I have no idea on the BBP policy for Runners-up but I feel they are very much eligible to compete... one more try.

UPDATE: Both made the list of official candidates for BBP 2012.

Palace admonishes Llamas over Pirated DVDs

Malacañang has admonished Presidential Political Adviser Ronald Llamas for purchasing pirated DVDs in a Quezon City mall last month.
In a letter penned by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., Llamas was also reminded to exercise good judgment in his personal endeavors.
“Taking into account your expression of ‘deep regret’ and your tender of an apology, you are hereby formally admonished and given a firm reminder that you should, in the future, observe a higher degree of circumspection and discretion even with regard to your private, non-official conduct,” Ochoa said.
Llamas was also advised to “act at all times with a high degree of prudence and propriety.”
While the purchase of bootlegged videos did not violate any law, the Palace warned Llamas of severe sanctions if he commits another act of impropriety in the future.
Llamas apologized to the President and verbally offered to resign during a meeting last Friday, but Aquino rejected it.

Powerade franchise back with San Miguel [as reported in Inquirer]

The San Miguel group may have just added a fourth team in the PBA with its recent reacquisition of the Coca-Cola bottling company.
This was learned by the Inquirer from a very unimpeachable company source after SMC president Ramon S. Ang reportedly met and closed a deal with Coca-Cola Philippines’ CEO Bill Schultz recently.
The San Miguel group actually used to own Coca-Cola before selling it in 2004.
Part of that deal was for SMC to have a right-of-first-refusal should the present Coca-Cola management decide to sell the franchise, which SMC is now exercising.
At the same time, the local executives of Coca-Cola, which played as Powerade and finished a surprising second to Talk ’N Text in the Philippine Cup last Sunday, are desperately trying to keep the Tigers even after the reported meeting between Ang and the Schultz.
Details of the purchase are being kept under wraps though the Inquirer also learned that SMC has already made a payment to Schultz in what could be the highest amount ever paid for a PBA franchise.
The Barako Bull squad was the last franchise that was put up for sale, with Bert Lina’s Air21 bagging the rights reportedly for close to P50 million last year with George Chua still retaining part ownership.
San Miguel’s purchase of the Coca-Cola franchise is reportedly easily double that amount, more so after the Tigers went deep into the playoffs and unveiled several superstars in the making in their lineup.
Selling the franchise has been in the minds of the foreign management of Coca-Cola for the past couple of years.
The source said the Tigers will reportedly remain intact until the end of the current season.
With Gary David and rookies Marcio Lassiter and JV Casio blooming into superstars, Coca-Cola/Powerade can rake in some more money by trading/selling them before the SMC takeover granted that it wasn’t included in the sale.
San Miguel already has Petron Blaze, B-Meg and Barangay Ginebra in the PBA, and should this deal be consummated, there will be only a total of four companies/personalities owning the 10 teams in the league.
Manny V. Pangilinan owns the Tropang Texters and Meralco, while Lina runs Air21 and Barako Bull.
Only billionaire Wilfred Steven Uytengsu of Alaska and the Raymund Yu-Terry Que tandem of Rain or Shine remain as the only owners with just one team in the PBA.
