A Basketball Standpoint: Top 5 Teams to Watch Out For in All Filipino Cup

The column from A Basketball Standpoint is written by News Bits Online's Admin Michelle Constantino. The writer of this column is in no way affiliated with any of the basketball teams in the PBA and writes this blog for the purpose of sharing ideas with one another to which you may disagree or not.

Tomorrow starts a brand new season for the Philippine Basketball Association and after the opening ceremonies which banner the muses of the 10 participating teams, it is game time between Global Port Batang Pier (the newest PBA team owned by Mikee Romero) and crowd favorites Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. But before teams get going, here is A Basketball Standpoint listing the Top 5 teams to watch out for this conference.

1. TALK AND TEXT TROPANG TEXTERS

Love them or hate them but the defending All-Filipino Cup Champions are still to look forward to this conference. With no addition to their roster, the Talk and Text squad is still intact and chemistry-wise has proven that they can make the playoffs and the finals almost every conference. Expect 2011 MVP Jimmy Alapag to still lead the Texters to at least the Final Four at the end of the All Filipino Quarterfinals and probably HEALTH would only be a factor for them to reach the finals to defend their crown once more.

Let us not forget, they have a new coach... actually, he is not new to the PBA.... Coaching Consultant Norman Black is now the head coach of Talk and Text and the Grand Slam coach has a good team in his hands, it is up to him to continue what former Head Coach Chot Reyes has done to the team (Norman will be wearing the TNT uniform, don't worry of seeing those loud prints :) kidding!)

2. ALASKA ACES

Mac Baracael and Sonny Thoss during their fans day (September 28) photo from Alaska Aces FB account

News Bits Online places Alaska on its high-list because of their re-tooled roster which now features 2011 #1 Draft Pick Jayvee Casio, Veteran Shooting Guard Dondon Hontiveros, role players like Nic Belasco and Eddie Laure completing the lineup and their impressive performance during their tune-up games prior to the opening of this season. We should not judge the performance of Alaska Aces coach Luigi Trillo just yet as we could see that he has all the pieces to make things fit, especially with Calvin Abueva coming in after his San Sebastian stay. Time would only be a factor for them to develop their chemistry but with the way they are performing, I am hoping to see the old Alaska back and making a run on the playoffs and even the title.

Let us hope the void L.A. Tenorio left them can be filled. :)

3. RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO PAINTERS

They dared to dream last conference and it came true as they were champions last conf, but News Bits Online thinks that ROS would have a fair shot with the title during the All Filipino Cup. Adding Chris Tiu to the roster means bringing in on-court leadership while Paul Lee recuperates from his injury. They didn't move any roster on trades so chemistry is no issue with this team (Ronjay Buenafe was traded to Meralco for picks) and they can bank on Gabe Norwood and Jeff Chan to share their national team experience to be able to help the team.

The Yeng Guiao led squad has no way to go but up, getting every inch of role player performance from the team that was never expected to win but did. "They dared to dream, they won the 2012 Governors Cup and they are bound to do it once and even more".

4. PETRON BLAZE BOOSTERS

New Man on a Mission: Petron Blaze Coach Olsen Racela
Petron Blaze Boosters is already loaded with talent and they became richer - ask all the teams and they would probably point at Petron as the team to beat. With new Coach Olsen Racela in the helm, Petron's mission is to make the pieces fit, a lot of them would have to sacrifice their playing time because of the star-studded lineup but they would all get the recognition they deserve. The #1 pick June Mar Fajardo proves his advantage in the Petron lineup as the walking mismatch hoarding rebounds because of his height on tune-up games and #3 pick Alex Mallari proved why he has a slot in the current lineup that includes Marcio Lassiter (comebacking after 3 weeks), Joseph Yeo and Chris Lutz, Alex Cabagnot (team captain), Dennis Miranda and Chico Lanete playing the guard/forward position for PBB.

We make this prediction, PETRON, when HEALTHY can win its AFC crown after a long time. We do not cast a doubt on the new coach Olsen, he has all the capacity to do so... especially with power names such as Jorge Gallent, Bobby Parks, Pido Jarencio, Biboy Ravanes and coaching Consultant Rajko Toroman helping him.

5. BARANGAY GINEBRA SAN MIGUEL

What's not to miss about GINEBRA?

The most popular team has added a gem in LA Tenorio in a blockbuster trade. They have 2012 MVP Mark Caguioa, The H-Bomb Rudy Hatfield, Jayjay Helterbrand and Kerby Raymundo whose slowly learning Ginebra brand of play as seen in the last conference. We watch how LA jells with the team to turn into a Lieutenant to a Gin-eral and how he can share the spotlight with household Ginebra names. We also watch Jayjay seeing him on the hardcourt when before he said he would retire. We watch Ginebra fans start jeering by tomorrow. Even yours truly, want to watch the improvements made off-season by Ginebra, especially with the addition of their rookies, Ellis and Jensen.

Pageant Watch: Nicole Schmitz and Ayelee Marie Dasalla

The last quarter of this year is still loaded with a lot of pageants where Philippines have selected their representatives this year. For the month of October, it is Nicole Schmitz and Ayelee Marie Dasalla taking the Philippine sash with them for the Miss International and Miss Humanity International 2012 pageants respectively.

Nicole Schmitz (Miss Philippines International 2012) is done with her send-off and she's now off to Okinawa, Japan. The 23 year old beauty queen is more than ready to attend the activities from October 1  to the finals date October 21 where Filipinos hope that Nicole can grab the 5th crown for the country (Philippines boast of 4 Miss International titleholders, Gemma Cruz Araneta, Aurora Pijuan, Melanie Marquez and Precious Lara Quigaman). She was previously interviewed and when asked what she would do if she won the crown, she said that she would be boarding the first plane back home to share the crown with her "kababayans".

The crown is currently held by Fernanda Cornejo of Ecuador.

She may not have gotten the YAY during the Binibining Pilipinas 2012 but she is still representing the Philippines to Barbados as Miss Humanity International Philippines 2012. Ayelee Marie Dasalla, a product of Bataan was chosen by John Dela Vega, national director in the Philippines to compete after he has fielded in one of her prized jewels in Czarina Gatbonton last year where the later was 2nd Runner Up in the premier edition.

The crown is held by Karabello Mokoalla of Lesotho. Pageant date is October 28.

Vice Ganda is Big Dome's highest-paid concert artist, says producer

Kapamilya comedian Vice Ganda's two concerts made him the highest-paid concert artist ever who performed at the Araneta Coliseum, according to a concert producer.

In a report by the Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP), actor-turned-concert producer Joed Serrano said he paid Vice P2 million for his first major concert, "May Nag-Text... Yung Totoo, Vice Ganda sa Araneta" last 2010.

The report said Vice at first didn't want to hold a concert at the Big Dome, because the venue was too large. But when Joed dared him and offered him a blank cheque, he said Vice wrote P2 million just to stop him from making Vice do a concert.

But Joed accepted the cheque and luckily, the risk paid off. Vice's next concert, "Eto Na, Vice Ganda. Todong Sample Sa Araneta" also was a success, as the "It's Showtime" host was reportedly paid P3 million. Joed said he grossed P14 million on Vice's concerts.

The report also said Joed will next produce the concert of another comedian, impersonator Ate Gay at the SM Mall of Asia Arena with a tentative date of November 30.

Another Must Know about the Cybercrime Prevention Act

A Philippine Senator warns the public that an FB like or share may be a ground for libel.

Senator Teofisto Guingona III said this statement amidst the Cybercrime Prevention Act which he finds too vague and broad as it is not clear who could be sued.

He opposes the new law by saying:  “If you click like, you can be sued, and if you share, and continuously re-share information, you can also be sued. Saka sino ang liable? Hindi klaro eh. ‘Yung original na nag-post? ‘Yung nag-share? ‘Yung nag-tweet? Kahit nga ikaw, mag-post ka ng simpleng ‘hehehe’ di ba? Ibig sabihin nu’n, sangayon ka (And who is liable? It isn’t clear. The one who made the original post? The ones who share? The ones who tweet. Even you, if you post a simple, ‘hehehe,’ right? Does that mean you agree)? Are you liable? So, napakalawak eh.”

Describing the law as unconstitutional, Senator Guingona filed a petition to the Supreme Court asking it to declare void “questionable” provisions of the Cybercrime Prevention Act that infringe on freedom of speech and of expression, among these the inclusion of libel among punishable crimes.

According to the senator, the new law also violates the constitutional guarantee for double jeopardy because a person can be sued for both the Cyber Crime Law and the Revised Penal Code.

While Guingona acknowledges the country's need for cyber crime law, he wishes for a review because the law enacted can supress people's rights.

The Conveniences of Online Banking

Online Banking does CONVENIENCE

With the conveniences of technology, gone are the days when you waste your time on banks for your transactions, online banking has helped made a difference. It is considered to be done faster, simple and secure and could be done anytime of the day.

The following are some of the transactions to which online banking has brought convenience for you:

1. Paying Bills
Your Globe Bills, your daughter's tuition fee or even donating to your chosen organization can be done through banking online. You just have to sign up your bill with your online banking profile by providing its account number and presto, as long as you have cash on your account, you can already pay your bill, no need to wait for those bills that might get lost in the mail.

2. Transferring Money from one Account to the Other
Whenever payroll comes, you would normally withdraw a certain amount of money to save and with online banking, you can do just that as long as both of your accounts are linked to your profile. As long as your account has been confirmed, you can transfer/deposit to your account anytime, even if it is after banking hours.

Interbanking transfers are still on the works though I believe only www.bancnetonline.com allows that.

3. Online Shopping
With your credit card or prepaid card like BPI My E-Prepaid, you can do online shopping. However, do remember that online shopping is a no-no if you are buying clothes/shoes, only do it for those which you do not have to fit. :) Online shopping also makes you see the trends without having to compete with so much people, especially when its on sale.

4. Reloading Prepaid Phones
Enroll your prepaid numbers within your online banking profile so you would just have to buy your load online and know that it would directly reach you. However, a bank only supports 1 to 2 mobile service providers so do check your banks out before enrolling your number.

5. Balance Inquiry
Online banking allows you to check your balance online, you would not have to run to your bank/ATM machine to check your balance. If you happen to be a businesswoman, you can see it in detail who paid you in your online banking portfolio.

MVP Cut Ties with Ateneo (Full Note)

It has been all over the news that businessman/tycoon Manny Pangilinan has cut ties with Ateneo. Here is the full transcript of MVP's letter, as shared  online by Denis Lucindo, Philex vice president for business development.

1. I do not agree with some of the CBCP's pronouncements, including its recent stance on the RH Bill. At times, I believe the CBCP has taken positions contrary to the interest of our country. It should earn its rightful place in the national debating table by showing tangibly and significantly its concern for the poor and the corrupt, and sharing the burden with business and government the enormous task of nation-building – including the appropriate moral formation of our people and our leaders.

2. The importance of mining – expressed in the development of natural wealth and national patrimony – is enshrined in our Constitution. That value as a tool for national progress is expressed in the Mining Act. For the Church to say otherwise contradicts a very basic document of our people and frustrates the people’s constitutional will, values, and preference – plus the right to improve economic welfare – 'to use these talents and multiply them, not bury them' – to use your own words.

3. Correlatively, I’ve always firmly believed precisely in that Biblical dictum on talents – be they tangible or intangible – to improve lives. Failure to manage one’s affairs – such as weak institutions, failed regulatory agencies, corrupt enforcements – do not mean a particular business is per se evil, as suggested about mining in that Jesuit Paper. It is man’s frailty – Filipino frailty to be exact – that should be blamed, not the business. I’ve already pointed out the examples of good mining practices elsewhere. Indeed, the Filipino’s failure to manage well is shown in almost all facets of our lives – poor airports, poor sewerage, unclean air, mediocre economic growth. The list is long. Our preponderant task as a people is simply to do better – to strive for excellence. Isn’t that the Ateneo motto?

4. As to the Church’s duty towards creation and human ecology, I submit that it is our first duty to understand its origins and workings truly. This means subscribing to, and encouraging, relentless scientific study of the universe and planet Earth – hardly a matter which the Church persecutors of Galileo can be proud of. Every human attempt at progress I dare say will have some impact 'at the expense of the environment' – even the building and maintenance of places of worship and of education. There should be no debate here, correct?

5. The Jesuit Paper reflects in parts, ignorance of the terms of EO79 and the Implementing Rules and Regulations. We should leave that to another paper to dissect. The ultimate questions for me are:

(i) Do the EO/IRR violate existing laws and the Constitution?

(ii) Do they violate the call for preferential use of land and resources for mining, for purposes of agriculture, tourism, or what have you – preferential rights articulated and protected by our Constitution?

In any event, to the extent that the terms of the Paper are non-negotiable, and do run contrary to what our laws and Constitution say and to what I believe in – that any business, even mining, can be made to serve man and God provided it is managed well and responsibly - this makes it difficult for my conscience to accept the Paper as currently drafted.

I must say that I am extremely distressed and saddened by this recent event. And in the context of two other gruesome incidents (i.e., plagiarism and the first mining blow-up) in the recent past, I believe we have come to the irretrievable point where it is best and appropriate to draw the line in the sand, to conclude that we have little or no common interest, and to say that I’d look like a fool helping an institution which opposes my conviction diametrically and unequivocally (“non-negotiable”). The logical consequences of this are: (i) each of us can pursue our advocacies freely without having to be sensitive with regard each other’s feelings; (ii) my complete and total disengagement from the Ateneo – something which, after reflection, I must confess I welcome with some relief at this stage.

Time to call it a day.

Let's Move and Let's Love

It's my dad's 50th Birthday on the 28th and when time allows, I would like to take him with me on a basketball game, this time it will be my treat (since I already have a job), with all the frills cheering for our favorite PBA team, Petron Blaze Boosters. My dad is usually the one whom I talk to most of the time with the basketball and techie stuff - he's more like an inspirational motivator, so this thing I would do I hope would make him smile and show how much I love and appreciate him.

I love you. :)
