Approved PBA Trades - Japeth gets wish to be traded

AKTV/Paul Ryan Tan

The PBA Office has approved the following trades which involve Global Port Batang Pier (on 2 different transactions)

1. A direct swap that brings Rabeh Al Hussaini to Talk and Text for the very controversial Japeth Aguilar who gets his wish to be traded, He is now with Global Port Batang Pier.

2. Meralco dealt Solomon Mercado, JP Belencion, Yousif Aljamal and Kelly Nabong for Global Port's Rey Guevarra, Josh Vanlandingham, Vic Manuel and a 2015 draft pick.

Both camps, Meralco and Global Port find this trade healthy as it is their way of rebuilding their team.

Sol Mercado has expressed on his Twitter account that he has been grateful for the playing time/growth given to him by Meralco and expressed his excitement as he plays with Batang Pier stars Gary David and Willie Miller.

Meanwhile, Rabeh Al Hussaini would be reunited with college mentor Norman Black in Tropang Texters.

With the trade, Japeth should play his A-game with Batang Pier because this is what he wanted.

Who wins? That we can find out as PBA Commissioner's Cup tips off February 8 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Last 3 days to apply for screenings for Bb. Pilipinas 2013

Relatively 3 days left before the extended deadline of Binibining Pilipinas closes for the girls who are interested to take part of Binibining Pilipinas 2013, We've seen pageant blogs feature those candidates that reached BPCI office, like Pia Wurtzbach, Ariella Arida, Mariel De Leon (daughter of Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong) and many others under the camp of Gaffud, Dela Vega, Flores and other handlers.

Are we going to see some more girls this week? That we have to find out. Deadline for Binibining Pilipinas 2013 applicants for screening is on January 31 (I just hope there's no more extension).

Reigning queens are Janine Tugonon (Miss Universe Philippines), Nicole Schmitz (Bb. Pilipinas International) and Katrina Dimaranan (Bb. Pilipinas Tourism).

Former TV host Pepe Pimentel dies

Former noontime game show host Pepe Pimentel passed away on Thursday, January 24 in Quezon City. He was 83.

Pimentel, host of the defunct game show "Kwarta o Kahon," was found unconscious at their house at No. 37 Scout Tuazon, Barangay Laging Handa in the said city this morning. A barangay official said Pimentel collapsed while inside the bathroom.

Pimentel's neighbor, a certain Dr. Montaño, seemed to have "expired" but would not go as far as to declare that the elderly man was indeed dead, citing a report from ABS-CBN News.

The host's remains will be brought to a chapel in San Juan where loved ones can visit and pay their last respects.

One more time for Jaysel Arrozal

One of the girls that have filed their applications for Bb. Pilipinas 2013 is a face very familiar to Bb. Pilipinas. A returnee by the name of Jaysel Arrozal. Jaysel has joined 2 previous competitions of Bb. Pilipinas in 2008 (where she placed on the Top 10) which was won by Jennifer Barrientos and in 2009, she was unplaced. In 2011, she joined the maiden edition of Miss World Philippines and was hailed as Miss World Philippines - 4th Princess (behind eventual winner Gwendoline Ruais who went on to be Miss World 2011 1st Princess).

With all her obligations (and contracts) with Cory Quirino's CQGQ done, she was one of the few ladies who passed their applications to beat the second deadline set by BPCI. Will Jaysel Arrozal make it to the official list of candidates and bring a crown home?
One more time (with feelings please?)...

    Goodluck Jaysel! ;)

Via Reyn's Room: LTO junks Robert Carabuena case

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has junked the case filed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) against the abusive motorist Robert Blair Carabuena who mauled a traffic enforcer in Quezon City last year.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino was dismayed with LTO's decision to junk the case. It can be recalled that the agency filed a direct assault case before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court against Carabuena, and a "disregarding traffic signs/ disregarding traffic officer" charge to the Transportation office, which asked for the revocation of driver's license of the tobacco company executive.

On its seven-page decision, LTO said Carabuena did not violate Section 21 of the Land Transportation and Traffic Code and said the incident was just a traffic violation and is not equivalent to a punishment like revocation of license.

Days after Carabuena's assault video became viral, he personally went to the MMDA office and apologized for mauling traffic constable Saturnino Fabros. MMDA accepted his apology however, still pursued with filing the charges.

MMDA is set to file a "motion for reconsideration" to LTO regarding the case.

Full Text: Sen. Enrile's Privilege Speech on January 21, 2013 (Transcript)

“Mr. President, my colleagues in the Senate:

The personal conflict between me and four members of this Chamber has triggered a venomous, malevolent and sustained campaign against me. This was spurred by my decision to grant them only P600,000 each as additional MOOE last November and to hold the release of the additional MOOE granted to the other Senators, except to my own office, last month.

The persistent attacks of my adversaries, whether they be my loud and bitter critics, or those lurking in the shadows for lack of courage to come out in the open, abetted by some elements in the media, have successfully poisoned the minds of the public.

The criticisms are based on outright lies, distorted information and deliberately misleading phrases such as "cash gifts", "Christmas bonuses", and worst of all, "bribes"- all at the expense of taxpayers' money.

With the way my foes have so cleverly crafted this disinformation campaign, I cannot blame the public for their sentiments and outrage over what they have been made to believe as an unconscionable and immoral use of public funds. The people have the right to demand from all of us an accounting of every single centavo of taxpayers' money entrusted to us. No one is immune or exempt from scrutiny in the way the public funds are spent.

The press is free indeed, and a free press is a powerful tool for public accountability. Unfortunately, those who are merely masquerading as "responsible journalists" are also free to choose what they want the public to know and to believe and what facts to ignore. In fact, my enemies and critics in the press, one of them known for their tag line "balanced news, fearless views", have enjoyed the freedom to carry on their own crusade- that is, to make sure that Enrile shall forever be known and remembered as a liar, a traitor, a thief, and a villain.

In their passionate desire to destroy me, my enemies and critics have not only dragged the reputation of my other colleagues, wildly accusing them of taking bribes and pocketing the people's money. They have succeeded as well in placing this very institution, the Senate of the Republic of the Philippines, under a dark cloud of doubt and suspicion as a house of thieves.

Senator Lacson has questioned the moral right and integrity of my most cantankerous critic. Her audacity in calling her colleagues my "cohorts" and painting them as crooks is indeed mind-boggling. When it was her turn to be challenged regarding her own integrity and to be called "a hypocrite par excellence", it seems was enough to pose a danger to her own health and whatever remains of her equanimity and sanity.

Actually, Sen. Pia Cayetano's office kept following up with my office and the Senate budget office about the release of her additional MOOE last December. When she and the three others found out that I had not authorized the release of any further additional MOOE to them, Senator Santiago started whining. She even cited the equal protection clause of the Constitution.

Later on, she and her group branded as immoral, illegal, unconstitutional, unconscionable, and a "bribe" what she earlier claimed she and the three others were entitled to. Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and Senator Antonio Trillanes who are both in the minority, swiftly followed with their own attacks and accusations. Sen. Pia Cayetano who was following up her additional MOOE was conspicuously silent.

What would they have done if the funds were given to them? Would they have whined and complained? Or, as Senator Santiago herself suggested could be done - Would they have pocketed it instead of using it appropriately for the operation expenses of their own offices? She goes on to say that senators take a percentage of their PDAF. I wonder...is she speaking from her own experience or field of expertise?

I never bribed anyone to gain support for myself, much less with the money of the people. I did not enter into any unholy deals or plots to assume this position of leadership twice, or to cling to it like a leech hungry for its perquisites. The very thought that this position is for sale repulses me. But apparently, Senator Santiago thinks everything and everyone here has a price tag.

In all my almost 89 years, I have gone through and endured many challenges and some of the worst adversities in life, countless acts of betrayal and ingratitude, and the most vicious and virulent attacks on my character in my 46 years in politics and public service. This wave of systematic demolition is really nothing new.

I can defend myself on my own. I have fought many battles alone, at times abandoned and betrayed by many. As I said in my book, I have won some and lost some. Such is the life I have lived.

I have incurred the bitter resentment and anger of many people along my way, and they are determined to pursue their crusade and carry their seething hatred against me to their graves. I know and I understand why.

But the Senate need not and should not suffer the venom which is aimed solely at me.

A leader who serves solely by virtue of the trust of his peers and who is worthy to be called as such must be sensitive to events that not only mar his integrity and moral rectitude, but tends to destroy the integrity of the institution he leads.

A leader must not play blind and deaf when the institution he serves and its members are unfairly and unduly dragged into the mud with him, thus tending to impair the confidence of those who invested that mantle of leadership upon him.

The honor of this chamber must be spared from the rapacity and the sly, cunning and ruinous machinations of some people among us who only have their political ambition and self-interest in mind.

One Senator is so desperate that he has repeatedly and shamelessly invoked and sought Malacañang's involvement and intervention just to get enough support to oust me. He continues to make a mockery of the Senate as an independent institution.

Of threats and coup rumors, we have had enough. I am way too old to be threatened by anyone, least of all by cowards and hypocrites.

I therefore move that the position of Senate President be declared vacant.

I ask that my motion be immediately put to a vote to pave the way for Madam Miriam Defensor Santiago, Senator Antonio Trillanes, any of the Cayetano siblings, or anyone else here who may share the same sentiments against my leadership and who may be secretly interested in this job the chance to be nominated and to seek the majority's support to be elected as the new leader of the Senate.

Whether or not I continue to have the trust and support of my colleagues in leading this Chamber is a matter that lies purely in their hands to decide. As I have said earlier, I serve at the pleasure of the majority of my colleagues. I claim no vested right to this high position. No one has.

And whether I was in the minority or the majority all the years that I have been here, I have tried my best to serve and to perform my role with equal dedication to my duty as a Senator of the Republic.

Let us not allow ourselves to be further derailed and distracted. Replacing me does not have to take so much effort, planning or plotting. This seems to be the pre-occupation of some people in this Chamber and a constant fodder for the rumor mill, and it is such a waste of time and energy.

Let us settle this matter once and for all, and let us not tarry so that in the very few remaining days we still have left, we can get on with the business of urgent legislation. Time is of the essence and we owe it to the people to perform our duty.

With that, Mr. President, I reiterate my motion to declare the position of Senate President vacant.”

And yet, another Bb. Pilipinas extension

Yes, you heard me right, the filing of applications for Bb. Pilipinas 2013 has been extended until January 31 (from another extended deadline which was supposed to end today, January 22).

Petron's chase for Tubid and the Barako Bull shakeup

The never ending chase for Ronald Tubid (currently playing for Barako Bull Energy Cola) by Petron Blaze Boosters does not stop even if the direct swap between him and Joseph Yeo was shelved.

This post is to update about the trade that is considered to be a blockbuster deal involving 5 teams and 10 players, with Petron getting Tubid and parting ways with Mallari and Duncil.

The trade is as complex at it can get, here is a timeline courtesy of GMANEWS.TV

Will Aces and Queens outdo their 2012 turnout?

    image

Beauty camps have been preparing for the 50th Anniversary of Bb. Pilipinas 2013, and Jonas Gaffud of Aces and Queens definitely want to improve their 2012 achievements in Bb. Pilipinas by having 3 of 5 winners in their camps (Janine - Miss Universe Philippines, Katrina - Bb. Pilipinas Tourism and Elaine - Miss Supranational Philippines) by holding a mock pageant with the girls they are set to fill in for this year. Truly a preparation indeed by the Gaffud camp.

Will these 14 girls make it to official candidates? Or will Gaffud's camp field in more contestants?

Caloy Garcia is the new PBA D-League Erase Placenta Coach

There's a rainbow always after the rain.

Yeng Guiao's lead assistant at the PBA team Rain or Shine Elasto Painters has added another milestone to his coaching resume. Assistant Coach Caloy Garcia is the new head coach of PBA D-League team Erase Placenta replacing fellow NCAA coach Aric Del Rosario who would like to concentrate in the campaign of his Altas team in the collegiate league.

Coach Caloy would be taking over a team which record currently  stands at 2-6 but would still have the chance to enter the quarterfinals when they sweep their last 2 games.

Joseph Yeo happy to still be with Petron

     [See related story: here]

An interview in Spin.PH saw a very grateful Joseph Yeo when he was informed that the trade involving him and Ronald Tubid would be shelved and he would be staying with Petron.

According to Joseph, there has been a sense of comfortability with Petron as he has been with the team for 3 years, his longest tenure to his team in the PBA.

For now, Joseph and Ronald (of Barako Bull Energy Cola) can stay with their respective teams as a three team 6 man swap is on the works not involving them.

Ricky Lo lambasted for 'awkward' interview with Les Miserables star Anne Hathaway

Journalist Ricky Lo's interview video with "Les Miserables" star Anne Hathaway is getting the attention of netizens, in a bad light.

In the video, uploaded by The Philippine Star Online on YouTube last Wednesday, Lo interviewed Hathaway but the latter found some questions too personal and annoying:

RICKY: "You lose the 25 pounds for Fantine? And how did you do it and how did you get it back?"
ANNE: "I'd rather not talk about weight loss please."

RICKY: "Have you ever experienced to be hungry, poor, you know? Just like the character (Fantine)."
ANNE: "That's a very personal question."

RICKY: "Any message for Lea (Salonga) who's looking forward to watching the movie and meeting you in person?"
ANNE: "We've already talked about that."

RICKY: "And what about inviting your fans from the Philippines to watch the movie showing in January?"
ANNE: "Why don't you invite them?"

Some YouTube users labeled the interview as "awkward" while one user commented:

"A multimillion, multi-awarded, classic, soon to be remembered by generations movie - and this newspaper sending an unprepared, Lea Salonga name dropper just to ask Anne how she got her weight back. This is so Ricky "LOW".

    Smart introduces LTE Plan 1299

Gone are the days when we cannot live a day without internet, which is why Telecom/Internet companies are coming up with ways to provide the best service there is to their clients. Smart has introduced a new LTE Plan in LTE Plan 1299 on top of their ongoing promotions for LTE Plan 3500 and LTE Plan 1799.

    Smart's LTE Plan 1299 is a monthly-subscription plan for P 1,299 with a 24-month lock in period.

It comes with a free LTE dongle or you may choose to upgrade your gadget to an LTE WiFi modem for a one-time fee of Php 2,000. Data cap however is lowered to just 5GB per month.

    Elaine Kay Moll: What's Next?

While Annalie Forbes is among those rumored to repeat for Bb. Pilipinas 2013, it isn't the same thing around for Bb. Pilipinas 2012 1st Runner Up turned Miss Supranational Philippines 2012 Elaine Kay Moll. You see, Elaine had the biggest chance of a lifetime that rarely happened in a Bb. Pilipinas Runner Up. She was appointed by BPCI to join Miss Supranational 2012, had the "queenly" send-off, was awarded as 3rd Runner-Up during the Miss Supranational 2012 contest (Ekaterina Buraya of Belarus won Miss Supranational 2012 contest) and was given a victory party/birthday bash when she came back. The experience definitely was more than what the 1st Runner Up expected, given  that it doesn't happen all the time (the last time you saw a runner-up or runners-up competing was when Michelle Reyes and Maricar Balagtas (1st and 2nd Runners-up respectively) were appointed by BPCI to different international competitions in 2001).
Now we are asking, what is next for this 20-ish something beauty queen? Will she skip 1 year at least before re-joining Bb. Pilipinas and pass the crown she's wearing now to the next BBP-Supranational (if that title should be awarded in the contest)? Will she be groomed by her mentor, Jonas Gaffud to banner this year's Aces and Queens? Or the Supranational experience changed her contract thus forbidding her to re-join under the BPCI banner,

That I (and I know you ask yourself)...
