Danny Ildefonso as a Coach?

 

With his name not submitted in the Philippine Cup lineup of Petron Blaze Boosters, 2 time MVP Danny Ildefonso reportedly is offered a coaching job to continue mentoring the big men of the only team he played for in his 14 year career.

Ildefonso, on his part is determined to talk to the San Miguel management, who reportedly had his number in his GMA Sports interview where he had talked about SMB trades and the things that happened during the last 3 years. He has not signed a playing contract but still attends Petron Blaze workouts where he continues to mentor "The Kraken" June Mar Fajardo.

My Thoughts on the Jay Washington trade to Global Port

This is still a news blog, I just have to share my thoughts on the trade that brought Japeth Aguilar to Ginebra, Jason Deutchman to Petron and Jay Washington to Global Port.

 

 

I was faced with a news that Jay Washington, one of the guys I root for in Petron Blaze got involve in a trade in exchange for Jason Deutchmann and for second picks in 2016 and 2017. While I can't help but be sad because I will not be able to see Jay in a Petron uniform, I realized it was for the best.

 

Jay's minutes dwindled in the first 2 conferences of this year and frustration grew larger and larger after Petron Blaze never made it past the quarterfinals where he was just on the bench. The two-time BPC never got the minutes he had when he once played for San Miguel, he was a part of the crowded frontline of Junmar Fajardo and Arwind Santos.

 

With his transfer to Global Port, He will be the top option in the post. He also has the range outside where the Batang Pier can capitalize by giving him set threes.

 

All the best for Jay Washington, may you get the form you were once known to be!

Arwind Santos on Boy Abunda's "Ikaw Na"

Almost a week after the "choking incident" that lead to the eventual banning of Petron Blaze Import Renaldo Balkman from playing in the PBA, Arwind Santos speaks up in Boy Abunda's "Bandila". Petron will play All-Filipino tomorrow versus Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in Panabo, Davao Del Norte. They are expecting new import Rodney White on Sunday.

Renaldo Balkman: Does he deserve a second chance?

It was already a won game by Alaska Aces (83-73) when Petron Blaze's import Renaldo Balkman had his meltdown It over a non-call by the referees, the series of actions went so odd, he pushed Assistant Coach Biboy Ravanes, went to the ire of the 3 referees, shove Ronald Tubid and even ended up choking Arwind Santos. To PBA fans, this is the first of any kind that has happened, especially an import doing it on his own team mates.

Rey Balkman  started a twitter fury that raged up to midnight, most calling the Petron management to find another import that would replace the "BULOKMANIMAL" as they would say with even of ABL imports like Gabe Freeman. It was also reported that Rey apologized to all his team mates, even to Arwind's mom, Arcelli and wife Ivette Gavieres-Santos.

But for SMC Sports Director Noli Eala, he has stood firm that Rey would stay as the former NBA cager gave them 5 wins.

Does he deserve to stay put?

Update: PBA Commissioner Chito Salud has summoned Balkman to the PBA office, while Snow Badua tweets that the faith of Balkman now lies at San Miguel Group President/Chairman Ramon S. Ang.

We are not pursuing Jay Washington says Global Port coach Junel Baculi

 

Never ending trade talks surmount Petron's Jay Washington.

Prior to the blockbuster trade that sent Aguilar and Mercado to Global Port, Washington's name was once lifted again to the trading block as a part of a 6 tram trade that didn't pursue as San Miguel Corporation pulled the plug when the trade involved Jay Washington of Petron and Kerby Raymundo of Ginebra. SMC Sports Director Noli Eala criticized the inclusion of Washington in the trade, and we quote:

“It is very unfortunate that some papers headlined an alleged trade involving some of our players which we dont agree with,” which Eala posted via his twitter account.

Another article in INTERAKTV say that Global Port will not pursue Jay Washington, that according to Coach Junel Baculi. 

Last November, Washington admitted that he has been on the trading block and uses it as a motivation to play better.

Petron's chase for Tubid and the Barako Bull shakeup

 

The never ending chase for Ronald Tubid (currently playing for Barako Bull Energy Cola) by Petron Blaze Boosters does not stop even if the direct swap between him and Joseph Yeo was shelved. 

This post is to update about the trade that is considered to be a blockbuster deal involving 5 teams and 10 players, with Petron getting Tubid and parting ways with Mallari and Duncil.

Joseph Yeo happy to still be with Petron

An interview in Spin.PH saw a very grateful Joseph Yeo when he was informed that the trade involving him and Ronald Tubid would be shelved and he would be staying with Petron.

According to Joseph, there has been a sense of comfortability with Petron as he has been with the team for 3 years, his longest tenure to his team in the PBA.

For now, Joseph and Ronald (of Barako Bull Energy Cola) can stay with their respective teams as a three team 6 man swap is on the works not involving them.

Sources: Deal called off as Petron would not part with Mallari

 

Just as Alex Mallari have been looking forward to a better direction when he learned he would be traded to Barako Bull, things seem would not go his way as Petron Blaze Boosters would not let go of their 3rd Overall Draft Pick. 

Mallari has been added in the package that would have send him in Barako along with Joseph Yeo for Ronald Tubid and one 1st Round Draft Pick. 

Barako Bull Energy Cola would be handled in the 2nd Conference by Rajko Toroman, former Petron consultant who influenced the Petron team to pick Mallari 3rd in the draft.

Trade Rumor: Tubid for Yeo (and Mallari) in the works

The PBA trade rumor which is already in the works involving a swap between Barako Bull's Ronald Tubid and Petron Blaze's Joseph Yeo just got bigger with Alex Mallari entering the picture.

Mallari, a 3rd Pick from the 2012 PBA Draft has seen limited playing time behind Petron's surplus of guards in Denok Miranda, Alex Cabagnot, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz. If this trade materialized, Alex and Joseph would be joining their former consultant Rajko Toroman who is expected to call the shots for Barako.

Update: This trade is set to push through after Ronald's promotional tour with Barako in the Sinulog Festival 2013 this weekend.

PBA Thursday: Twice-to-beat Playoff Games Results

Thursday, December 13, 2012 is the twice-to-beat playdate when the #1 seed and defending champions Talk and Text Tropang Texters play the #8 seed Air 21 Express and the #2 seed San Mig Coffee Mixers take on #7 seed Petron Blaze Boosters. Talk and Text and San Mig Coffee enjoy a twice to beat advantage over their opponents.

1st Game: Talk and Text (no. 1) vs. Air 21 Express (no. 8) - Talk and Text eliminates Air 21, 105-100
Capitalizing on the end game mistakes of Air 21, Talk and Text pull of a victory to eliminate their opponents 105-100. Ranidel De Ocampo's clutch three pointer helped the cause and with Jimmy Alapag and Jayson Castro shooting on their free throws, it was enough to keep the Express off for them to gain the first semifinal seat of the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup Playoffs.

It was a night that shown Mike Cortez of the Air 21 Express play his best game at 21 points.

It took another 5 minutes to decide this game which showed Mark Andy Barroca rising to the test. With Jonas Villanueva out with fever, The Coffee Prince showed that he can be Tim Cone's best guard scoring 15 points on extended shooting. San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone described him as "Wolverine" and truly, his game really proved that.

San Mig Coffee had to face the comebacking Marcio Lassiter who was able to the spread the floor with his 3-point shooting until the 5:51 mark where he had a bad fall. He had to be taken out of the venue in a stretcher.

Talk and Text awaits for the winner of the Alaska - Meralco series (Alaska leads 1-0) and San Mig Coffee waits for the winner of the Rain or Shine - Ginebra series (ROS leads 1-0). Game 2 will be Friday (December 14) on the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

To Trade or Not To Trade: Petron's Jay Washington

After the win of Petron Blaze versus Rain or Shine last night (November 14), Jay Washington confirms of the trade talks that he may be involve in, that he knew about it and is just ready to play basketball.

There are 2 rumors afloating: A straight up trade between him and Global Port's Gary David and a three-team trade which would bring him to Ginebra, Gary to Petron and Kerby Raymundo to Global Port.

There has been questions on Jay's ability to play lately: Can he coexist with Arwind Santos? Where did his BPC numbers go a few years back? Petroniverse fans observed him very lazy on court that some even compared his game to Global's Rabeh Al Hussaini, who has been a cause of headache of his coaches. 

But a very different Washington showed up Wednesday against the E-Painters, it was like the Jay it used to be...

To trade or not to trade? That is the question...

A Review of the Philippine Cup Format

An inter-intra format clusters the Air21 Express, Meralco Bolts, Petron Blaze Boosters, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, and San Mig Coffee Mixers (formerly B-Meg) in Group A, and the Alaska Aces, Barako Bull Energy Cola, Global Port Batang Pier, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, and the defending champion Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in Group B.

Teams in each group will meet the other twice (10 games) and members of the other group once (4), completing the elimination phase. Fans will therefore be treated with the spectacle of crowd heavy Ginebra squaring off with Petron and San Mig Coffee twice while tangling with TNT, Alaska and Rain or Shine once and vice versa.

The top eight teams based on their cumulative win-loss records advance to the quarterfinals, while the 9th- and 10th-ranked teams get dropped from contention.

Rewarding the top two quarterfinalists with twice-to-beat advantage, QF1 has the No. 1 team battling No. 8 and No. 2 tangling with No. 7 in QF2.

A wringer awaits the four other qualifiers: No. 3 takes on No. 6 (QF3) and No. 4 faces No. 5 (QF4), both via best-of-three playoffs.

The four emerging playoff winners then move to the best-of-7 semifinal series under this matchup: QF1 winner vs. QF4 winner and QF2 winner vs. QF3 winner.

The championship series will also be a best-of-7 showdown.

A Side Note to Petronovela - The Newest Primetime Addiction on AKTV

Forget "A Beautiful Affair" or "Temptation of Wife" who would be premiering on the 29th. Petronovela is more interesting, as another sidenote to the Petronovela returned after their win against Global Port, 110-98.

 

The man with the name of Marcio Lassiter, who has not seen action for the Blaze Boosters since he got traded in April formally stepped into the hardcourt during the last minute of their Friday game, perhaps it is how Olsen wanted it, to make Marcio feel the game. His sole shot was a made three-pointer that brought cheers to those who are watching in the Coliseum and even to Twitter, as fans tweeted Mrs. Jerlyn Lassiter, Marcio's wife.

 

 

Mam Jerlyn certainly had her hands full tweeting during her husband's 1st game back after a long time.

 

 

How will Marcio help the team? That is something I am very excited about. Until Friday (November 2) when the Petroniverse battle Air 21 Express.

A Basketball Standpoint: Why I am happy for Olsen Racela now.

From today, Olsen gets to handle the whiteboard, map out plays by himself leaves a smile to the Petroniverse

If you have been following my blog, you would know how much I am a Petron fan, though I had always make this blog balanced as I blogged about ROS, Talk and Text and other teams, I always find a special place for Petron.

Let me start by saying, I do not hate Rajko Toroman... His presence with the Smart Gilas 1 squad has certainly pummelled Philippine basketball to the international scene. However, when he started taking an active role at the Petron Blaze Boosters bench, things started to heat-up, especially when he started sharing "co-coaching" duties with the Head Coach, Olsen Racela.

Olsen Racela is not new to the franchise, spending almost majority of his playing career with the Beermen and a year as assistant coach to Ato Agustin. When he was appointed Head Coach, things didn't came as easy as it would be. Olsen considered it difficult to handle the pros than to handle Energen Team Pilipinas but he knows he has a lot of support ahead of him, that including Rajko Toroman.

The first 5 Petron games had been a drag. With a 2-3 record that time, Players seemed to be confused to whom they would listen to during timeouts, to whom they would approach during dead-ball situations and to who really has the say with the whiteboard. We can recall instances during timeouts that Rajko was mapping out plays for the team. Fans got confused with the eventual setup and for those who have seen Olsen's career like me, We wanted to see Petron with Olsen (and Olsen alone as the head coach).

The management did a shake-up Wednesday. The early Toroman was nowhere to be found in Petron practice. Olsen Racela would call the shots alone (technically not alone as he has a talent-pool of coaches). During his first game alone versus Global Port Friday, we didn't see that much changes, there are still Toroman plays but everything is a work in progress.

I am happy for Olsen because finally, he has been given the opportunity to do things on his own. I cannot say this would mean WINS for Petron but this would mean less confusion to the team setup itself. Arwind Santos made an interesting statement remarking that the players are happy and comfortable (and music is finally allowed in their dugout). With the quote that the Best Players do not become the best coaches?" Let's wait and see. I do not want to typecast. I will just watch.

The Puzzle in Petron Blaze Boosters

All 10 teams have played their opening games and the most talented team on paper, Petron Blaze Boosters was expected to turn out dominant in its first game but it didn't turn to otherwise as the 2012 Governors Cup champions Rain or Shine Elasto Painters beaten them 102-86. Here are some notes of a spectator, the puzzle in Petron Blaze.

1) Junmar Fajardo on being pressured as #1 Draft Pick
Being a #1 Draft Pick has in it self all the pressures therein and Junmar Fajardo is the recent victim. People expected that his first game with ROS would be one of his best. But hey, this kid from Cebu is just 22 years old and has the towering height off 6 foot 10 that no one can match this conference, he would develop, he is learning from the best, Lakay and Dorian in particular, do not expect him to be a super-rookie overnight.

Notes on Junmar: Great foot work, for his height/weight, he is relatively fast as he is running for loose balls and almost beating his guard opponents from ROS. However, ROS capitalized on Belga/Quinahan going to their comfort zone, the three point shot where they know Junmar would have a hard-time defending.

2) The Continuing Drama of Jay Wash - Arwind Santos playing time
We've seen this before. We're seeing it again, Jay Washington and Arwind Santos playing time has been cut for the other... This issue should be addressed by SMC Management.

3) Alex Cabagnot vs. Dennis Miranda - proficiency in playing time
We saw it during the first game that Denok Miranda has been more efficient in a shorter playing time than his counterpart, Team Captain Alex Cabagnot. What is 39 minutes to less than 20 minutes per game, Denok has delivered when it counts. We give Alex a leeway on this first game.

4) Where will you place Marcio Lassiter when he comes back?
To add to the headache of Coach Olsen Racela, Marcio Lassiter, Petron's prized acquisition would be coming back soon, what type of role would he play in a team full of stars?

5) Racela - Toroman (who's the real coach of Petron?)
After Petron's opening day loss, news came out that Toroman was the real coach of Petron. We have to wait for more views during the next game. For now, let us give Coach Olsen a heads up!

PBA Trade: Who got the most of it? Air 21, Petron or Ginebra?

KG Canaleta goes to Air 21 in a 3 team 7 man player trade

The PBA on Thursday morning approved the proposed trade featuring seven players and two draft picks among Air 21, Ginebra, and Petron.

In the deal, the Express will receive Petron big men Noy Baclao and Rob Reyes and Ginebra wingmen KG Canaleta and John Wilson; Petron will receive center Magi Sison, guard Paolo Hubalde, and a 2014 second round pick from Air 21; and Ginebra will receive Elmer Espiritu and Air 21′s first round pick in 2013.

From a Basketball Standpoint: The Changes that Norman Black and Olsen Racela would bring to their PBA teams

What  you would be reading in this blog post is based from the personal opinion of the owner of the blog which you may or may not agree with.

TALK AND TEXT: NORMAN BLACK

The man is no stranger to the PBA, he was a grandslam coach for San Miguel Beermen and has been the Tropang Texters Consultant for quite a long time. Now coming back to head coaching duties is Mr. 100% Norman Black who would be taking over the position left by multi-titled Coach Chot Reyes who would be coaching Smart Gilas 2.

What he would bring to the Talk and Text table?
His coaching experience that stemmed from the late 80s to present. We have seen it in Ateneo, his bag of tricks that enabled the Blue Eagles to win 4 straight titles in UAAP. He is able to strike out the best with his players, and probably the biggest change he would make is not the game of TNT but how fans look at TNT.

TNT had a fair-share of bashers because of their Coach Chot Reyes but with Norman in the helm I think everything would tone down.

If ever they renew Japeth Aguilar, Norman Black could definitely use Japeth as he know how he plays back in his ADMU days.

PETRON BLAZE BOOSTERS: OLSEN RACELA

Olsen returns on the hardcourt as the head man of Petron Blaze Boosters replacing Coach Ato Agustin with the management seeing the 2011 Governors Cup Champions falter during the 37th Season. Olsen is no stranger to the San Miguel/Petron franchise, he was San Miguel's high point man and team captain, learning the best basketball from Coach Ron Jacobs and Coach Jong Uichico. Prior to the head coaching job, Olsen was already behind the Petron bench as an Assistant Coach after his retirement.

With Olsen being the choice of majority of Petron players, I see that Olsen would change how the team relate to each other, that the PBB bench, though filled with star studded players are of equals. It is also expected that Olsen would run the plays he learned from his head coaches to his now players. If coaching experience is questioned, see how Energen Pilipinas U-18 and tell me if Olsen cannot make it big as a coach in the PBA.

I hope Coach Olsen can emphasize TEAM in BASKETBALL, that whatever players would be left there after PBA Draft Day, they would be able to capitalize, just as how they won the 2011 Governors Cup Finals.

We wish Coaches Olsen and Norman best of luck with their teams.

A Basketball Standpoint: What to Look Forward to with Petron Blaze Boosters

The 2011 Governors Cup Champions are already out from defending their title, but instead of dwelling on what-ifs, it is high time to look on what to look forward on the all-star line-up of Petron Blaze come the 2012-2013 Philippine Cup.

New Coach?

RAJKO TOROMAN, rumored to take Ato Agustin's place next season.

The Serbian Coach has made the hearts of the SMC officials and of course, if you are an SMC official, you would not hire Toroman to be a consultant on a team forever, he would have to be a coach sooner or later - with Cone's success with Llamados and with the resurgence of Mark Caguioa helping Siot's Ginebra Gin Kings, it is most likely that Toroman would probably call the shots for PBB. Toroman can help identify player's roles and put them on the efficient way they can be.

A Healthy Marcio Lassiter

Marcio, Petron's acquisition on a five man trade with Powerade (Marcio + Celino (who eventually played for Barako) for Rabeh, Rey and Lordy) is the player to watch out for Petron. His presence on the hardcourt is sorely missed this conference.

Petron has a good number of picks for the 2012 Rookie Draft, they can make use of it to strengthen their lineup. There is an interesting cast of draft applicants that might catch the eye of the coaching staff of PBB.

Chris Lutz signing a fresh contract

If there is one amongst the many PBB players who deserves a fresh contract, it would probably be Chris Lutz. Away from all the injuries that he had on his first year, Chris knows his offense and defense pretty well, can take the shot and make shots for his team mates. He is a take-charge guy. It would be ugly on a shake-up if he would be wearing another uniform.

RECALL: Petron gave Lutz a 1-year contract only.
