PBA Semifinals Series Update: ROS - Powerade (1-1)

(photo: www.pba.ph)

This series is as interesting as the Petron - Talk and Text series as ROS - Powerade head to Game 3 later with a 1-1 series tally.

The first game was won by Rain or Shine where Paul Lee shined at the 2nd half by scoring 22 of his 25 points in the second half and Jeff Chan shined with 27 points.

The second game last Friday showed that the Tigers can bounce back with their James-Wade combo, Gary David and Marcio Lassiter combining for 62 points of Powerade's 121 points to beat ROS and tie the series (121-113).

Now that the playing field is relatively equal, ROS-Powerade would make imperative adjustments as after tonight, 1 team would be leading 2-1 :

Analysis: Petron getting the job done against Meralco

The Semifinals cast is complete: On the other bracket is a new blood with Rain or Shine and Powerade Tigers beating their respective adversaries, Ginebra and B-Meg and the other bracket being old rivals, Petron Blaze Boosters versus Talk and Text Tropang Texters. For Talk and Text Tropang Texters, they had the luxury of the twice-to-beat advantage and got the first semifinals seat early after beating Barako Bull 81-79. For Petron, they had to do it twice against Meralco Bolts, and it didn't come easy.

Petron's first win came last Friday, December 16 - at the 91-84 victory at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, coming from Alex's back-to-back 4 point plays. [Relieve it here]. They had been able to contain the powerhouse duo of Mac Cardona & Solomon Mercado with their team defense.

After their Friday victory, Petron fans got to witness the Powerade Tigers eliminating the top-seeded B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados, with this, the Petron team used this at their advantage not to get beaten twice by the inspired Bolts. They've managed to close out their Quarterfinals series by holding off the Bolts to just 64 points in a game where "Mr. Clutch" Alex Cabagnot only played for 3 minutes because of a groin injury that happened during the last 2 minutes of Game 1.

Petron did not panic even if their court general was not on the floor for them, every healthy Petron player managed to show their game: Rob Reyes, having 5 of the 9 blocks of the team showed no mercy to the likes of Solomon Mercado who knows his way of finding his shots. Chris Lutz all around game provided the energy for the team. Of course, the same old Arwind Santos, the league's best rebounder -had an all around game of 18 points and 7 rebounds.

What managed to impress Petron fans is Petron's newest team rebounder - Joseph Yeo who had 13 points & 11 rebounds. They did win twice against Meralco because of team defense. With the likes of Axel Doruelo and Nonoy Baclao contributing to the cause of Petron, nobody should downplay their chances, like those who have thought Powerade is just a shoo-in the quarterfinals.

OLD and NEW, things get interesting when the Semifinals series start on January 4 (for Powerade and ROS) and January 5 (for Talk and Text and Petron)

3rd Member of the Semifinals named: Rain or Shine beats Ginebra

Rain or Shine Elasto Painters gives their Head Coach Yeng Guiao a Christmas gift by winning the game today (December 21) by beating Ginebra Gin Kings, 106-91 to arrange a Semifinals meet with the Powerade Tigers.

Jeff Chan led the Elasto Painters with 22 points, while Ginebra Kings was lead by Mike Cortez with 17.

With Ginebra's early elimination, the biggest question is will Jayjay Helterbrand retire? It was recalled that "The Fast" only signed 1 conference contract with the Gin Kings and as of this writing, We don't know if he's still going to come back next conference.

THE SCORES:

RAIN OR SHINE 106 - Chan 22, Buenafe 13, Matias 12, Belga 12, Arana 11, Norwood 9, Quinahan 9, Lee 8, Rodriguez 6, Cruz 4, Tang 0.

GINEBRA 91 - Cortez 17, Canaleta 13, Intal 12, Caguioa 11, Mamaril 10, Labagala 8, Villanueva 8, W. Wilson 6, Helterbrand 6, Tubid 0.

Quarters: 41-24, 58-37, 78-61, 106-91

Analysis: How Powerade got the job done

As of this writing, 2 teams have already secured their places in the Semifinals of the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup: Talk and Text Tropang Texters and Powerade Tigers. Talk and Text making it to the Semifinals was expected, but for Powerade Tigers, winning twice against top seeded B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados, it was like David and Goliath but this time, David (Gary David) had lots of help.

The first game of the quarterfinal series is where Powerade showed that they can be a title contender. Behind the efforts of Gary David who had 32 points all in the first three quarters, Marcio Lassiter  with 24 points and an improved game from Doug Kramer who contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds in a sorry loss by B-MEG over Powerade, 97-88.

With Powerade getting first win, the pressure was with the Llamados when Game 2 happened last  Sunday. The lone knock-out game packed crowd as well, as spectators were interested to see whether B-Meg can knock Powerade or Powerade as a true contender and it proved the other way around: Powerade eliminated the Llamados, 131-123 in a comebacking effort from the Tigers who did well on the rainbow country by hitting 22 3-point shots and still behind the efforts of Gary David who had 37 points, Marcio Lassiter and Jvee Casio.

What Powerade did to beat B-Meg was nothing extraordinary: It was playoff basketball, Gary's team mates in Game 2 knew that when he's hot, He can score in bunches. With B-meg's defense running towards Gary, Gary has other options, Marcio, Jvee and even the likes of Josh Vanladingham, Will Antonio, Doug Kramer and Rommel Adducul inside the paint. Jvee Casio, despite being matched up with guards like James Yap, Roger Yap and PJ Simon knew how much he should work harder - as hard as how he did for him to be included in the Gilas National team. Indeed, it was Powerade's heart that brought them back to the Final 4 - the last time they had advance to the series was during the 2004 Fiesta Conference, back when they were still known as Coca Cola Tigers.

With their achievement, It was fitting enough for Gary David to get the Player of the Week award this conference.

The Powerade team today is different from the past years - They can give ROS or Ginebra a good fight at the Semifinals, they can prove themselves as a contender. I wouldn't give a straight forward prediction though: I would be an interested spectator on how Bo Perasol, his coaching staff, the players do well in Semifinals.
