San Beda nips Letran Knights to complete another 3-peat

It took them 3 games to get the championship but they got the job done as San Beda Red Lions manhandled the Letran Knights 67-39 to take their third straight NCAA championship at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

It was San Beda's 17th NCAA title and the first for rookie coach Ronnie Magsanoc, who took over the coaching duties from Frankie Lim, who was meted a two-year ban by the league last year.

“It’s all about the players making things happen,” said Magsanoc, who also named the league’s Coach of the Year. “Everybody had a hand in this difficult run.”

BASER AMER: THE LION KING
Shortly after, 2nd year player Baser Amer was named as the NCAA Finals MVP. He chipped in 14 points in a starting role to help the Red Lions clinch the title.

NC reduces sanctions on eight Beda players

The NCAA reduced the suspension on eight San Beda cagers involved in a brawl during a volleyball game at San Beda gym last December from two games to one while asking them to apologize to the league and offending parties for their unsportsmanlike act.
“Out of humanitarian reasons, the Policy Board decided to reduce sanctions. Players should write letter of apology,” said NCAA Management Committee chair Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, of Season 88 host Letran after a six-hour meeting at Letran’s St. Thomas Building in Intramuros.
Suspended for one game are Kyle Pascual, Jake Pascual, Jaypee Mendoza, Rysie Koga, Rome dela Rosa, Jose Carmelo Lim, Baser Amer and Antonio Caram.
Garvo Lanete, Sudan Daniel, Mar Villahermosa and Dave Marcelo’s suspensions were also reduced to P15,000 fine each to be charged to San Beda while the bans on Nigerian Ola Adeogun and American Julius Armon would be tackled only if they pass the eligibility committee as players.
As to the two-year ban on San Sebastian volley coach Roger Gorayeb, the league said he has until before the second semester of this coming school year to appeal.
The league board chaired by Letran rector-president Fr. Tamerlane Lana, OP, also decided to implement the new rule stopping the recruitment of foreign players starting in Season 90, or two years from now.
The league approved a three-year contract with new television partner, TV 5’s sports channel AKTV on IBC 13, starting this year, ending its decade-long partnership with Studio 23.
“TV 5 (AKTV on IBC 13) offer has been approved by the Policy Board. April 21 is the tentative contract signing,” said Calvo.
“Also, the NCAA will stop recruitment of foreign players starting on Season 90 via unanimous decision. Those in the pipeline foreign players can still play depending on the eligibility committee,” he added.

San Beda's New Main Man: Coach Ronnie Magsanoc

Meralco Assistant Coach and member of the elite PBA’s 25 greatest players, Ronnie Magsanoc has been tapped by the San Beda College as the new coach of the Seniors team: Red Lions after the current coach Frankie Lim left.

Lim's imminent departure was due to his involvement to the brawl last December between him and San Sebastian Volleyball Head Coach Roger Gorayeb, this lead to suspensions and 2 year ban for both coaches and suspension to multiple San Beda players.

Magsanoc is no stranger to San Beda, He was a San Beda Red Cub and after his stint with the Red Cubs, Magsanoc went on to play for UAAP Season 49 Champions, University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.  Known in the PBA as the Point Laureate, he was one of the league’s most decorated players.

His elder brother, Ernie previously held the position on Season 76 with San Beda being lead by Powerade's Ricky Calimag.

PCCL Finals: Ateneo vs. San Sebastian Stags

It's Ateneo vs. San Sebastian Stags on Monday (December 12) after the Blue Eagles defeated the San Beda Red Lions today (76-63). The Blue Eagles were lead by their center, Greg Slaughter who had 20 points on 9-14 field goal shooting.

The Blue Eagles now had the chance to go up with the Stags which beat them in a crucial game, 70-69.  Ateneo had no problem dealing with San Beda with the team missing the services of Garvo Lanete in a shoulder injury.

The back-to-back PCCL champions can still make the adjustment before theey meet San Sebastian on Monday.

Today: PCCL 2011 (San Beda vs. Ateneo) - Dec. 9, 2011

With the Stags assured of the twice-to-beat advantage in the PCCL finals, the last berth is expected to be a battle between the two collegiate champions, San Beda and Ateneo.

Ateneo, the UAAP champion for the past 4 seasons, recently lost to the Stags (70-69) when Kirk Long's 3 pointer got nullified.

The Red Lions meanwhile, even without point guard Garvo Lanete have managed to log wins, the last one against the UC Webmasters.

A win by the Red Lions would ensure that the PCCL 2011 champions would come from NCAA.

The PCCL Finals will begin on Monday, with the Golden Stags possessing a twice-to-beat advantage over their opponent.

Semerad twins transfer to Ateneo

(Photo: Then San Beda Red Lions Anthony and David Semerad in a cover for Chalk Magazine last July 2011)

Basketball players and twin brothers Anthony and David Semerad has confirmed that they would be leaving NCAA's San Beda Red Lions team to join UAAP's Ateneo De Manila University basketball team.

The two can be eligible to play for Ateneo by 2013 when they sit out 1 year for residency purposes.

However, they might sit out one more year for playing for the inaugural PBA D-League under Maynilad.

(NCAA rules allow their players to play for minor leagues such as PBA D-League while UAAP players should play at least 2 years before doing so. Thus, the rule might apply for the Semerad twins that they might sit out 2 more years)
