Nokia Asha 302

The Nokia Asha 302 is inspired by the design of the Nokia E71 with the pillowed convex keys on its full physical QWERTY keyboard. It has a 2.4-inch TFT screen and is powered by a 1GHz processor.

This phone is geared towards young professionals and budding entrepreneurs being among the first Series 40 phones to support Mail for Exchange so you can sync your office e-mail, contacts and calendar wherever you go. You can receive your e-mail in both plain text and HTML, view and forward attachments, create and view calendar events, and even lookup contacts in the global address book.

If you’re not going to use it for mail, the Asha 302 can also connect to popular social networks with widgets and notifications to keep you posted on what’s happening with your friends right from the homescreen.

Angelo Castro Jr. passed away

Broadcast journalist and anchor of ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) Angelo Castro Jr. has succumbed to lung cancer on Maundy Thursday.

Castro was the anchor of ANC's The World Tonight. He was 67. He died at the St. Luke's Medical Center, where his family stayed beside him until his death.

Tournament Format:
In the Eliminations, teams will only play against teams in their group. Top Four (4), based on their win-loss record, will advance to the KO crossover quarterfinal round. In case of a tie, the quotient system will be used. Winners will advance to the KO Final Four. Winners of the semifinal round will advance to the winner take-all Championship Round.

NC reduces sanctions on eight Beda players

The NCAA reduced the suspension on eight San Beda cagers involved in a brawl during a volleyball game at San Beda gym last December from two games to one while asking them to apologize to the league and offending parties for their unsportsmanlike act.
“Out of humanitarian reasons, the Policy Board decided to reduce sanctions. Players should write letter of apology,” said NCAA Management Committee chair Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, of Season 88 host Letran after a six-hour meeting at Letran’s St. Thomas Building in Intramuros.
Suspended for one game are Kyle Pascual, Jake Pascual, Jaypee Mendoza, Rysie Koga, Rome dela Rosa, Jose Carmelo Lim, Baser Amer and Antonio Caram.
Garvo Lanete, Sudan Daniel, Mar Villahermosa and Dave Marcelo’s suspensions were also reduced to P15,000 fine each to be charged to San Beda while the bans on Nigerian Ola Adeogun and American Julius Armon would be tackled only if they pass the eligibility committee as players.
As to the two-year ban on San Sebastian volley coach Roger Gorayeb, the league said he has until before the second semester of this coming school year to appeal.
The league board chaired by Letran rector-president Fr. Tamerlane Lana, OP, also decided to implement the new rule stopping the recruitment of foreign players starting in Season 90, or two years from now.
The league approved a three-year contract with new television partner, TV 5’s sports channel AKTV on IBC 13, starting this year, ending its decade-long partnership with Studio 23.
“TV 5 (AKTV on IBC 13) offer has been approved by the Policy Board. April 21 is the tentative contract signing,” said Calvo.
“Also, the NCAA will stop recruitment of foreign players starting on Season 90 via unanimous decision. Those in the pipeline foreign players can still play depending on the eligibility committee,” he added.

PBA limits use of vuvuzuelas

Following clamor from irritated fans, PBA commissioner Atty. Chito Salud limited the use of vuvuzuelas and air horns in the General Admission section only in all playing venues starting in the do-or-die double header this Sunday.
Salud swiftly acted on the league's TV partner AKTV's formal complaint last night that the irritant noise is drowning the color commentary of the games – drawing the ire of the fans, some of whom aired their concern on social media.
"If @PBAonAKTV is concern with their televiewers, then they should act on those annoying sounds of vuvuzuela," said one of the many visibly irritated fans (@pau1h) on Twitter last night.
Meralco Bolts' fans were the first to use the cheering equipment, which gained popularity in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
B-Meg Llamados team governor Rene Pardo appealed to disallow the use of the noisemaking gadgets after Game One of their best-of-three quarterfinal series but was rebuffed.
"I appealed to the PBA office to disallow the use of the horns by Meralco but they said there was no rule against its use," Pardo posted on his Facebook account last night.
In retaliation to Meralco fans' use of vuvuzuelas, B-Meg fans brought in their own air horns doubling the decibel of the irritating noise in the coliseum.
This prompted television partner AKTV to formally write the league to stop the use of the of those noise equipment.

San Miguel Corporation acquires 49% of PAL Holdings

San Miguel Corp. has firmed up a deal to acquire 49 percent of tycoon Lucio Tan’s PAL Holdings Inc. for about $500 million, thereby obtaining a significant foothold in national flag carrier Philippine Airlines.

Inquirer sources said SMC and the group of Lucio Tan agreed in principle for the former to buy into PAL’s parent company before the SMC’s exclusivity period lapsed in end-March.

An emergency board meeting was convened by PAL Holdings on Monday afternoon to discuss the deal with SMC, which had been in the works for the last three months.

The sources said that under the arrangement, SMC would buy 49 percent of PAL Holdings, a publicly listed entity. The structure of the deal is described by sources as complex but in the end, SMC’s entry in PAL’s parent company is seen giving it an effective 40-percent control of the airline. As expected, SMC will have management control of the airline.

SMC’s entry as Tan’s strategic partner was seen helping in the refleeting and modernization of the aircraft of Philippine Airlines in preparation for the projected heavy influx of tourists in the coming years, which will be beneficial to the Philippine tourism industry.

The purchase price was in line with PAL Holdings’ current valuation at the stock market. As of Monday, its shares were up 0.49 percent at P8.18 a share, giving it a market capitalization of P44.13 billion.

Industry sources said Tan and SMC president Ramon Ang had been in talks for the latter’s potential investment in PAL, initially meant as a personal venture for Ang, who is himself a pilot. However, SMC itself had become interested in the airline, leading to a memorandum of understanding signed last December that paved the way for a due diligence audit.

The airline business is seen in line with SMC’s diversification into infrastructure-building. San Miguel is investing about $300 million to modernize and set up new tourism amenities at the Godofredo P. Ramos airport in Caticlan, the main gateway to the world-famous Boracay Island. The conglomerate has also expressed interest to participate in the public bidding for the public-private partnership airport contracts.

Ang has been in on-and-off talks to invest in PAL over the last few years.

Ang’s business rival, First Pacific Co. Ltd. executive director Manuel V. Pangilinan, likewise expressed interest in PAL and while an alternative offer was kept as a back-up plan, industry sources said Tan himself and his brother Harry Tan had favored Ang’s proposal.

PAL earlier got an imprimatur from Malacañang to spin off its catering, ground handling and call-center reservations units, making it easier for the airline to attract investors. The spin-off plan is a measure intended to stabilize PAL’s finances due to the lingering effects of the global recession.
