Interaksyon.com: UST bags 14th UAAP overall crown

Once again, University of the Santo Tomas is on top of the UAAP mountain.

The Growling Tigers bagged their 14th straight and 39th overall general championship in UAAP Season 74 which will formally end on Saturday.

Santo Tomas will claim its trophy during the league’s closing ceremony on Saturday, 1 p.m. at Philippine International Convention Center Forum 1 and 2.

Each title is awarded 15 points in the tally, 12 for the second placer, 10 to the third placer, eight to the fourth placer, six to the fifth placer, four to the sixth placer, two to the seventh placer and one point to the eighth placer.

UST claimed titles in eight sports, along with seven second-place and three third-place finishes to take 298 points.

The Tigers had a 20-point lead over La Salle, which had 278 points after winning four titles, seven second placings and seven third-place finishes.

Far Eastern University took third place with 229 points after taking part in all but eight of the 28 events. The Tamaraws won seven titles and could have been a contender for the general title had they participated in all events.

University of the Philippines claimed fourth spot with 219 points while Ateneo, the season host, was fifth with 207 points.

University of the East was sixth with 140 points followed by Adamson with 105 and National University with 81.

UST swept the men’s and women’s judo and claimed the men’s fencing and table tennis and the women’s beach volleyball, football and tennis crowns.

La Salle ruled in men’s swimming and tennis, and in the women’s volleyball and chess tournaments.

FEU grabbed the athletics crowns and the men’s beach volleyball, volleyball and chess and the women’s basketball and taekwondo diadems.

State U took the top spot in men’s football and women’s swimming and table tennis while Ateneo captured the men’s basketball and men’s badminton crown.

UE also had two titles in women’s badminton and fencing.

Adamson and NU ruled the diamond with the Falcons triumphing in softball and the Bulldogs annexing baseball, the school’s first UAAP title since the men’s chess team bagged the gold in 1986.
