Award-winning director Marilou Diaz-Abaya dies

Award-winning film and TV director Marilou Diaz-Abaya succumbed to breast cancer on October 8, 2012. She was 57.

The news was confirmed by Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, who performed final rites on Abaya at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig City on Sunday. She died 6:45 p.m. in the said  hospital.

One of Diaz-Abaya's works is the 1998 biopic "Jose Rizal," which earned her a Best Director award in the 1998 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) and the 1999 FAMAS and Urian Awards. She also directed GMA Films' "Muro Ami" (1999) and Star Cinema's "Bagong Buwan" (2001).

She also received recognitions from Star Awards, the Catholic Mass Media Awards, the British Film Institute Award, the International Federation of Film Critics Award (FIPRESCI), and the Network of Pan Asian Cinema Award (NETPAC).

She was also founder and president of Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute and Arts Center.

Her last work was the ensemble film "Ikaw Ang Pag-ibig," released in 2011.

Diaz-Abaya was married to filmmaker Manolo Abaya, with whom she has two sons, Marco and David.
