"This afternoon, the President has appointed Marvic Mario Victor F. Leonen as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court after having received the short list from the Judicial and Bar Council and interviewing each nominee," Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.
The 49-year-old Leonen is the youngest appointed Supreme court magistrate, beating the record previously set by now Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Leonen would fill in the vacancy left by CJ Sereno when she was named Chief Justice.
To date, after this appointment there are 4 Aquino appointees sitting in the high court: Sereno (Chief Justice), Associate Justice Reyes, Bernabe and Leonen.
He is expected to serve for 21 years, until age 70.
