UPLB grad Alyssa Asilo awarded posthumous degree

A rare disease took the life of University of the Philippines-Los Banos (UPLB) graduate Alyssa Asilo, but her school did not find death as a hindrance to conforming her degree.

The 23-year-old Alyssa already finished all her academic requirements, including internships and a thesis, before she died of leukemia last April 6.

The UPLB awarded a posthumous Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree to Alyssa, who re-enrolled in the college after taking a leave of absence for a year due to the rare type of cancer she had. It was the first time the UP College of Veterinary Medicine confirmed a degree posthumously.

Alyssa's parents went up to the stage to receive her fruit of labor. 1,700 students also received their diplomas during the graduation ceremonies.

Praises poured into Alyssa's Facebook account after her death. Her friends and colleagues said she is truly an inspiration for her strength and influence.
