Analysis: PBA Quarterfinals Pairings

The elimination round of the 2011-2012 PBA Philippine Cup has ended. Alaska and Shopinas are out this conference after sporting a record of 3-11 and 0-14 respectively. The final quarterfinals pairings were finally known after Ginebra toppled Talk and Text last night, 96 - 82, that is with extra motivation coming from Jared Dillinger: Read here.

The format of the quarterfinal round are as follows: #1 and #2 would have a twice-to-beat advantage over #8 and #7 respectively.

#1 and # 8 - BMEG Derby Ace Llamados versus Powerade Tigers
Season Series: B-MEG won 97-80 on a game where B-MEG Coach Tim Cone allowed his wards to move freely (a period of adjustment that time from the triangle offense) and it was a game where PJ Simon showed his wares with 21 points.

What Derby Ace should expect from Powerade?

Powerade's big 3: Gary David, Marcio Lassiter and top rookie JV Casio has carried the load for the Tigers towards the elimination round. They had managed to beat teams like Talk and Text with defense and they are especially dangerous when Gary David starts hitting the threes.

also look out for: Doug Kramer, the Most Improved Player of the team who can score in bunches every time he has the ball on the inside presence. He would join forces with Alex Crisano and Rommel Adducul inside the shaded lane for those rebounds.

Should step-up: Rudy Lingganay, Will Antonio, James Martinez, Sean Anthony

What Powerade should expect from the Llamados?

Derby Ace Llamados seemed to have adjusted to the triangle offense of Coach Tim Cone. Big game James Yap has proven why he had been B-Meg's top dog and 2-time PBA MVP. Also helping him is PJ Simon, the comebacking Kerby Raymundo, Joe Devance, Marc Pingris.

Should look out for: The Triangle. Coach Cone along with Johnny A and The Jet Jeffrey Cariaso, players who were used to the triangle has taught the team little by little until they had slowly adjusted to it. Starting out flat, the Llamados have proven to be title contenders by an 8 game winning streak to end the eliminations.

Should step up: Josh Urbiztondo, Rafi Reavis

#2 and #7 - Talk and Text Tropang Texters versus Barako Bull Energy
Season Series: Barako winning over Talk and Text 100 - 87 in what became Miller-time as Willie Miller had 27 points.

What Talk and Text should expect from Barako?
Ever since Barako went back to their old monicker "Ang Bumangga Giba", a lot had been expecting that Barako would be like those days under Coach Yeng Guiao, but after a string of losses, a lot of spectators believe that Barako has no chance at all of beating Talk and Text, but as I looked back to the results, they beat the defending champions with Miller showing his stuff and the Barako Bull defense they were known for.

Willie Miller must lead this team again twice if they want the upset of biblical proportions and removing TNT from the equation. Same goes for Mick Pennisi, whose 3-point shooting, especially when hot is enough to break the defense off Tropang Texters. You should also look at Danny Seigle, "Dynamite Danny" is out to prove that there is still something he could do to help the team.

Should step up: Dorian Peña, Paul Artadi, Wynne Arboleda

What Barako should expect from Talk and Text?
The Defending Champions despite being riddled with injuries have continuously proved themselves because of the loaded lineup they have. Leading the charge of TNT would be defending PBA MVP Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams and Jayson Castro with the hopes that their injured stars would eventually play for the QF.

Jayson Castro, last year's Most Improved Player have set the par high even though they are riddled with injuries. The Blur is showing why he can be the face of TNT and why Coach Chot Reyes has given him trust to deliver the ball and shoot when opportunity comes.

Also watch out for: Japeth Aguilar, the former ADMU standout has shown why he has conquered Gilas and others.

Should step up: Larry Fonacier, Harvey Carey and key reserves like Pamboy Raymundo.

The battle between the #3 and #6 as well as the #4 and #5 are best-of-three affair and they would start on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

#3 and #6 - Petron Blaze Boosters versus Meralco Bolts
Season Series: Both teams splitting the series 1-1 with Meralco winning the 1st game 80-70 and PBB winning by a split of a hairline, 75-76.

What PBB should expect from Meralco?
Meralco would definitely run, with shooters like Mark Cardona, Solomon Mercado and even Gabby Espinas, who even listed as 6 foot four is a monster inside. Most often, Mark and Sol play alternately so the wing defenders of Petron should play solid defense in guarding the two. Solomon Mercado has now matured into a guard that passes the ball to an open team mate. Mark Cardona "Mr. Captain Hook" would not let his guard down when he's open and he'll go for the shot.

Also when you talk about Meralco, you talk about the "ageless" Asi Taulava. Asi's conditioning still makes him the best big man in the league.

Also look out for: Reynel Hugnatan, Mark Isip and Mark Yee

What Meralco should expect from PBB?
Alex Cabagnot has improved his clutch three point shooting and is deadly when left open. Dennis Miranda has managed to step-up with their injury-riddled team and made them remember why he was once a star at SLR.

Of course, when you talk about PBB, you can't forget the name Arwind Santos. Arwind is a double-double scoring machine and his long spiderman arms makes it easy to collar rebounds. I think the defense of Meralco would try to concentrate to stop him.

Also look out for: Joseph Yeo, Lordy Tugade and Danny Ildefonso and hopefully, Chris Lutz can suit up.

#4 and #5 - Ginebra Kings versus Rain or Shine Elasto Painters
Season Series: ROS and Ginebra played each other once and ROS won 94-93.

What Ginebra should expect from ROS?
ROS is an unpredictable team because their lineups that start each game are different and the guy that would step up would be different: Ryan Araña, Gabe Norwood, Beau Belga, JR Quiñahan, Paul Lee, Ronjay Buenafe, Jeffrey Chan would lead the charge of the Elasto Painters to pass the crowd-favorite Ginebra Kings in the QF.

What to look out for this team: 3 point shooting - the likes of Ronjay Buenafe and Jeff Chan, once they start shooting and it shoots, they shoot like there's no turning back.

Also look out for: Paul Lee, some teams concentrate on stopping this prized rookie from UE because he can create shots that sparks the energy of the team. ROS could also capitalized on Ginebra having no dominant big men

What ROS should expect from Ginebra?
Of course, The never-say-die attitude of the Gin Kings and the crowd is a + but expect more from the Barangay with Mark Caguioa leading the charge along with JC Intal and the rest of the crew like Mike Cortez, Rob Labagala ad Willy Wilson doing the job in the defensive end that brought them to a 5-game winning streak ending the elimination by winning against Talk and Text
