Petron Blaze's Goal To Excel

I usually write about teams who played for the playoffs of the 2011 - 2012 Philippine Cup and by far, I've received a number of views even from set of fans from teams like Powerade Tigers & Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (who would be paired in another semifinals series come January 4) and I tried myself not to be biased despite me being a certified Petron fan. Anyway, anyhow, I've written this article in response to the article I read, which I believe was very unfair for Petron.

With the way last season's Governor's Cup ended, no one would have even predicted that Petron Blaze Boosters - a team who played the Governors Cup Finals without PBB's stalwarts Jay Washington and Rabeh Al Hussaini and where nothing was against them - just play, get 4 wins, win the title, no pressure at all, while for the Tropang Texters, after winning the Philippine and Commissioner's Cup, all eyes were on them to win their 3rd title, much ado to the most coveted grand slam, something that didn't happen for them during the 36th Season, when the Blaze Boosters had it otherwise.

Riding on the arms of the eventual Governor's Cup Best Player of the Conference/Finals MVP Arwind Santos, the stellar play of Petron's replacement import, Anthony Grundy, the ace decision-making of Alex Cabagnot, the experience of Team Captain Danny Ildefonso and a company of stars which can pass as starters like Jojo Duncil, Joseph Yeo, Lordy Tugade, Denok Miranda, Sunday Salvacion, Mick Pennisi, Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra - enough support that made them the 2011 Governors Cup Champions spoiling TNT's fete for grand slam.

And now, both Talk and Text and Petron are head-to-head again, this time at the Semifinals round of the 37th Season of the PBA Philippine Cup - things became different: No more Mick Pennisi to deliver the dagger 3 pointers, no more Paolo Hubalde and Jojo Duncil as support crew as they've went back to Shopinas.com and no more Sunday Special with Sunday moving to Barako Bull in a draft day trade where he and Mick Pennisi went to Barako Bull for Carlo Sharma, Dondon Hontiveros and draft pick (which turned out to be Chris Lutz) but still, it is the same team that had the heart to fight a Goliath and win the championship, Petron would not be slayed by the thought of the deeper bench of Talk and Text - I talk about deep, having respects for their bench which includes Raymundo, Weinstein, Gamalinda, Larry Fonacier and Gilbert Lao - they have Jared Dillinger, Kelly Williams, Jimmy Alapag, Harvey Carey and their difference-maker: Japeth Aguilar who can deliver big-time numbers and block shots like a house on fire. Injuries or no injuries, Tropa has a loaded lineup which headlines: Jayson "The Blur" Castro. Yes, it's Castro who is going to be TNT's main man, not last season's MVP Jimmy Alapag and it is proven: Contain Castro's game, definitely TNT's offense would go low. Whenever TNT gets its streak, they can be hard to stop.

But with this in hand, I believe Petron Blaze Boosters are still on target with their goal: EXCELLENCE: They have their Mr. Energy Guy (Chris Lutz) who is a rookie but has established his game from Smart Gilas, thus the trust of the Coaching staff in him to play 40 minutes and lead the team even in scoring, Joseph Yeo can slash well at the hoops, Rob Reyes has proven that he deserved another chance at basketball by being monster of  logging those rebounds. Alex Cabagnot has proven time in and time out that he is "Mr. Clutch", Danny Ildefonso's Playoff Experience has proven vital for the team and of course,  Arwind "The Spiderman" Santos, a double-double scoring machine who was considered a "curse" at first but has proven himself especially with the absence of Petron's top-gun, Jay Washington by being the Governor's Cup BPC and a leading BPC candidate for the ongoing Philippine Cup. If given a chance, even guys like Nonoy Baclao, Rey Guevarra, Carlo Sharma and Axel Doruelo can show small numbers that can contribute to the cause of the Petron Blaze Boosters.

Petron has been injury plagued from their Governor's Cup Championship to present, but credit the team for the championship and what they had accomplished in the ongoing tournament: from the Team Management and Coaches for making the most of their lineup. For having to bring out the best with their role players. For their starters stepping to their A-Game.

This series against Petron and Talk and Text would be as interesting as the ROS - Powerade match and believe me, you wouldn't want to miss it. [Series start January 5 at Cuneta Astrodome].
