Obama named Time's Person of The Year

United States President Barack Obama is Time's "Person of the Year" for 2012.

The announcement was made on Wednesday on NBC's "Today" show, AP reported.

In the short list for the honor are Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who was shot in the head for advocating for girls' education; Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi; Apple CEO Tim Cook; and Italian physicist Fabiola Giannati.

Obama also received the honor back in 2008, when he was President-elect.

The "Person of the Year" award goes to the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year for good or for ill.

Last year, "The Protester" got the honor. In 2010, it was Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Other winners are Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Bono and President George W. Bush.
